.VOB conversion to .mpg

I am trying to capture video clips off a home made video dvd but am unable to rename the .vob files to .mpg. I can rename them but when i play them only 6 seconds or so play back. Someone suggested finding a .vob extension converter program but would like to ask anyone here your opinion how to capture these video clips and bring them in to sony vegas pro.

Fwiw, these are mini-dvd's with chapters as shot by the videographer.

I have used this function a lot and still do when I get DVD's from clients from time to time.

Womble works well. They have a utility that will read the vob and figure it out. You can then generate an mpg file without re-encoding.

I have also found that you can drag the *.IFO file to the timeline and vegas will decode the vobs correctly.

wanted to thank 'musicvid' for suggesting to do the 'import camcorder disc' function in vegas. that worked like a charm. I really appreciate such an easy fix. Thanks to everyone else who made recommendations too.

This is why this forum is great - I too would have overlooked the Import Camcord Disc menu item.

Vegas is a huge product with many ways to skin a cat - sometimes I think we don't appreciate how great this forum can be.
