This usually based on a frame rate mismatch.

Are you using media with different frame rates?

How is the frame scale of your timeline set?

My projects are 60 fps and the clips are captured by Nvidia Shadowplay. They have a variable frame rate ranging from 0 to 60 fps. I never noticed this behavior in VP 17 and also never had black frames in my renders. My first renders from VP 18 had black frames where I had split clips in the timeline which is how I noticed the problem. I can fix it manually but it's a big effort to check every single split with a microscope to ensure the program did what I already asked for.

Even when I highlight space and press delete, there can still be space left over. The second deletion always fixes it but I feel I shouldn't have to do this or suffer from random black frames in the render.

Thanks for your help!

Variable frame rate video isn't a good base for video editing. Our advice still exists to better transform it to a fixed frame rate before import.

That said, in Options/Preferences/General which option did you select for VFR audio sync?
