VP13 WAV file train wreck...

wwjd wrote on 10/7/2016, 12:02 PM

What gives?  Used to work fine.  Pulled in some WAVs and they were distorted or all loud hiss, with parts cutting in and out.  Then tried WAVs from my ZOOM H2 and kinda similar.  They played back fine in REAPER, and look to be mostly around -12... drop them into Vegas, and they explode out the top, cut in and out.

Any ideas?  Some codec or somthing?  I have VLC installed, and QT, on Windows 10

My WAV files become corrupt in Version 13 (build 543) as well..... very bizarre.

I open a project and bits of other tracks appear within each other.... and the waveform indicates actual changes to the file itself.

A workaround is to open the offending sound files in Sound Forge, make a small tweak (lowering the volume by .02db for example), then resave.

Vegas then seems to be able to handle the file cleanly.

A possible related annoyance that I have seen referenced in other threads is the glitching and skipping during playback when change view magnification, manually scrolling, or performing other mouse functions within the timeline.

I have WAVE plug-ins (VST2), Windows 7 64bit, 64GB RAM, VLC.... can't think of anything else pertinent.

good to know it is not just me.  I wonder if VP!4 would fix this?  A second a go, I unmuted the WAVs track and they were all double speed and chipmunk sounding!  In the past, I converted to 320 MP3 and it worked fine, but this project is too big for all that hassle

My next move is to take the entire project and load it up on a secondary machine with the same version of Vegas. There's something that tells me it is the setup on my system, or maybe hardware/settings that is messing with things..... but it is seriously wrong because I can take the source WAV file that is corrupt in the Vegas timeline, play it back in VLC.... and it will demonstrate the SAME corruption.

When I load an offending clip into Sound Forge, the waveform itself is conformed to the distortion or corruption... you can actually SEE it. Then, if you affect a change and save it.... PRESTO! The waveform AND the soundfile itself are back to NORMAL.

And all of the above is repeatable and is only occurring with source data that has been used in a Vegas project.

Sometimes you wish silent movies would make a comeback!

I've been reading it may have to do with soundcard settings verses file bit rates:  44 or 48k at 16 or 24bit.  Tried switching the properties around but files still look/sound corrupted in Vegas.  Also reinstalled my sound card drivers but it didn't help.  The same WAV files play back just fine in VLC, Reaper, Groove, Windows Media Player, Quicktime

Can you upload a sample of the WAV files somewhere? I would be curious to see what V12 does with them.

when I get home I will do that.  :)   probably some weird codec I installed long ago that vegas still uses??  At least others have the issue too.  I get the "jumbled parts from other files" in there as well as loud static.  I think there is a way to clean and reload your "used project media pool" thingy (i forget what it is called ATM)  that might help

File rendered in REAPER, but other WAV files I've downloaded act similarly random.

No issue here. I see the same as Set in both VP13 & VP14. Windows 10 Pro version 1511.

Check which codec is being used in Vegas by right clicking on the file and choosing "Properties" and looking at the bottom. In my VP13 it is using this codec:

C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 13.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\wavplug\wavplug.dll

Thanks, Nick, I will check that out.
