VP22 build 250 - error when opening to audio editor

ChasMc wrote on 1/29/2026, 1:08 PM

I need to use VP22 because VP23 doesn't work with AVI projects.

Problem is when I select an audio section for editing (I use RX11 & have been for as long as it's been out including past versions).

After I select the audio clip I need to fix, I select Open copy in Audio Editor. I now get an error message stating " An Error occurred during the current operation".

And " An error occurred while opening a codec".

The stream format is AVI. It's a PCM audio stream, 48khz 24bit stereo uncompressed

If I try the Open in audio editor, it takes a long time to convert file. When it does open in RX11, it opens all 41 minutes of audio not just the one selected audio file I need to work with.

As I don't use AV1 media, I can't help on that front. But when using 'Open in Audio Editor' to either RX11 or SpectraLayers Pro (and many earlier versions), it has always been the case that the entire length of the audio event opens in the audio editor, not just the shortened edited length as on Vegas Pro's timeline. The only exception I've found is when Sound Forge Pro is the preferred audio editor. In this case, the entire length also opens but the shorter edited length of the audio event is highlighted (with loop markers) so that unwanted sections of the audio can be deleted. It's a little bit harder to do this if the highlighted section is mid-event because then it may be necessary to add the orange markers to the in and out points so that the deletion points can be identified. Please note however that when using this approach with SFP as the preferred editor, I always render to a new .wav file so that the original audio event in VP remains unaffected.

"Open copy in audio editor" opens the event's duration that is on the timeline as a new file 'aka, take'. "Open in audio editor" opens the event's entire file regardless of the event's duration on the timeline. Opening the entire file takes longer.

That's what my problem is, with the error when I open the copy in Editor.

The following are the results of testing I did in both VP23 and VP22 with a stereo PCM 48kHz 24 bits audio only .wav file:

The "An error occurred while opening a codec" error occurred in both VP22 and 23 when selecting 'Open Copy in Audio Editor' not only in RX11 Adv but also in Sound Forge Pro 16, Audacity and SpectraLayers Pro 12.

The same audio file could easily be imported into RX11 via dragging-and-dropping from the Windows Explorer window.

By comparison, stereo PCM 48khz 16 bits audio as part of AVC H.264 media has always opened in the preferred audio editor using either the "Open ..." or "Open Copy ...: option when R clicking the audio on VP's timeline.

The weirdest thing is that a mono PCM 48khz 24 bits audio only event (recorded at 32 bits float in Audacity then exported to Sound Forge Pro at 48/24) opens in all four audio editors from VP23 using either "Open ..." or "Open Copy ..." - and other audio only stereo events in 44.1/24 and 48/16 also opened as expected using "Open Copy ...". It seems that the source of the audio media has some influence of whether or not "Open Copy ..." works - but that's well beyond my pay grade.

A possible solution: If your final render is going to be 16 bits audio, try rendering (transcoding) the audio event in VP to 48Hz 16 bits and replace the 24 bits audio event with the render.

Alternatively, try dragging-and-dropping the AV1 file directly into RX11 and if the import works, export (render) the audio to 48/24 in RX11 and see if that solves the "Open Copy ..." problem in VP.

I should add that I've never been able to open audio in Sound Forge Pro (any then current version) from GoPro (5, 8 or 11) by using "Open ..." from any version of Vegas Pro while I've had those GoPro cameras. Sound Forge opens but then I get much the same error message but within Sound Forge:

Latest GoPro audio is stereo AAC 48khz 16 bits.

However, when SpectraLayers Pro (any then current version) is selected as the preferred audio editor in Vegas Pro, "Open ..." has always successfully worked. I think RX as well.

I haven't tried it before with GoPro audio until today, but oddly "Open Copy ..." does successfully open in Sound Forge Pro (16). So incredibly this is the reverse of the OP's experience with AV1 audio.

Sound Forge will not open HVEC files...though I think the AAC audio is the same.as the AVC (H264) files which open on my system, directly or through Vegas' open in audio editor..

I ended up with a work around. I rendered the audio to a wav file and used that. And that worked. But you may need to split the audio where needed so you don't open the whole file in the editor.
