VP22 new explorer file sorting issue

bitman wrote on 8/4/2024, 3:41 AM

The new explorer is not able to sort my files properly, which in turn becomes cumbersome to import the all in one go in the right order. I'll explain: I have a folder with a bunch of jpg's named with ascending names (e.g. by cypher). The sorting seems to take in account, not only the name, but also the file date created/modified which is different than the date taken as I created the filenames off line while sorted them with date taken.

Unfortunately these dates created/modified are often the same since they were created offline in bunch.

What I want is a proper sort whereby the current date sort can be omitted in the search (and sort on name only) or better still changed to date taken, which I believe is a more accurate media date than whatever date is stamped after a copy or rename of a file.

Note that the legacy file explorer does the name sort correctly (I tried with on same folder).

I name all my photos and videos like this:

YearMonthDate-HourMinuteSecond-ORIGNAL NAME

20200125-165748-DSC03446.jpg

20200125-170031-DSC03448.jpg

20200125-191302-DSC03450.jpg

20200125-205324-DSC03461.jpg

I do not know if this will help you. But your naming convention isn’t intuitive for me.

In the new Explorer window in 'Details' view, clicking on the header in a column will sort the list based on the data in that column. For example, clicking on length will list the media shortest to longest; clicking the header again will list longest to shortest. Clicking on the name column will list the media in increasing name order; clicking the header again will list in decreasing order.

In the new explorer window in 'Details' view, I'm only getting a 'Date' column - not 'created' and 'modified' columns as occurs in the Windows explorer window.

For renaming media, I use the free Bulk Rename Utitlity. It is very flexible about how to rename, but the downside of that is that it has a steep learning curve. For media renamed by this app, the date used in the new Vegas explorer window is the modified date - but it still appears in name order.

@Dexcon

I use Picture Information Extractor (PIE) to import my photos (and videos) and rename at the same time:

I have used Bulk Rename Utitlity since 2008, and yes: it's a fantastic tool!

@bitman, you NOK image is actually sorted "alphabetically" correctly.

Your "OK" image is not but takes "numbers" into account by placing "10" after "2".

An easy solution, change 1 - 9 to be 01 - 09...

bitman wrote on 8/4/2024, 11:54 AM

Thank you all, that was dumb of me not to spot this pure alphabetical VP22 new explorer behavior!

Thanks to @jetdv I understand now how to workaround this issue, and why it works in VP21 and not in VP22.

As a sidenote: with all this "AI" in the new Vegas VP22, legacy VP21 explorer is smarter as it takes numbers into account for the sort!

Not sure if this "different" explorer sorting behavior versus legacy explorer sorting is as intended, or is it a regression bug? Maybe @VEGASDerek can confirm this.

The reason I get this numbering xxx(1).jpg, xxx(2).jpg, etc... is from a simple renaming without any third party tool, just select all in windows and rename the first file, it will rename all with the same and generate "number suffixes" added at the end between brackets, unfortunately it does not rename with with (01), (02) etc....

Anyway, I would love to see Date Taken as a sort parameter in the Vegas Explorer, it would solve bad (re)naming in an instant.

@bitman, it's a NEW explorer window - totally unrelated to the old explorer window. The old one is still available if you go into the deprecated features and turn it on. Perhaps it's a sort option that can be added to the new one.

yep, I know, the screenshot is with both the new and deprecated features legacy explorer enabled!

For any future renaming I will be changing numbers without leading zero with a leading zero!

I tend to leave as much as possible all deprecated features "as is", meaning disabled.
