VP23 randomly freezing during render

anthony-chiappette wrote on 9/19/2025, 5:58 AM

This has happened at least 4 times in the last 3 days. When rendering a project, it will get partway though, usually about half, then it will just freeze. I can't do anything and have to kill the process through task manager 3 or 4 times before it actually closes. However, If I run VP23 again and render the project, it will work fine.

Why is VP23 randomly freezing during rendering? I always render to 1080 p 59.94 frames AVC in MP4 format CBR at 28,000,000 - that matches my source (except bitrate is 35M). I never have issues rendering in VP22.

There just seems to be so many bugs in 23 that just freeze the software, no error pop up or crash dialog, just freezing.

You also had freezes with 22 didn't you? Is it more with 23?

Could you try the default preset vs quality for NVIDIA? Is there anything notable at the point where the render crashes- Fx, change in media type, etc?

I really didn't have render crashes with 22, at least not that I recall. I get crashes while editing with 22, as well as 23. I suspect the freeze in rendering occurs at transition points, but I can't be sure because video just stops and I can't do anything. There doesn't seem to be any abnormally high activity in task manager for cpu/gpu when I try to kill VP23.

I'm just sticking to 22 until all the kinks get worked out.

@anthony-chiappette One thing to try with render failures, is to limit the maximum number of rendering threads. Best is to start quite radically to set it to 1. It is in the preference tab "video".

(no such issue at all with 22)

Any error message? Anything seem to trigger a crash?

I had that happen after 2 first good renders, freezes and crashes, but then, for no reason at all, renders were working OK again.People thought I was the only one and that there was something wrong with my system. Obviously that's now not the case.

Possibly, but best is to try and see, you have nothing to loose by trying this. On the other hand it could be that the rendering speed increases or is not that much affected by having the number of rendering threads to 1, due to less latency, less memory swap (which in your case your 5060 with only 8GB VRAM is minimum for VP23, so a bit on the low side- 16GB or more needed for AI), but stability is almost guaranteed to improve.

I don't use any AI stuff. I just upgraded to that 8GB card because I was told my GTX 1650 with 4GB wasn't enough. I don't do heavy duty projects; this is a hobby for me. I use simple 1080p 60 fps MP4 video straight from my Canon cameras. I don't really do anything too fancy and not too many fx, I do use animated text quite a lot though, and can have as many as 10 or more text events on the timeline. I usually have 2 videos / audio tracks in my projects, but not always. Right now, the rendering threads is set to 32,

There is nothing wrong with 8GB in VEGAS Pro 23 and in my experience you can use every feature to its fullest (all the AI Fx at the highest quality). A 30XX with 8GB or more is not the minimum it's the recommended setup for 4K editing.

The problem here is a bug with VEGAS, though what it stems from is a question.

If anyone could provide a sample project with media (short one that fails is good) it could be invaluable for testers and developers to uncover what's going on with certain renders.

Just looked at my current project, 200 clips of 4K XAVCS total time 31min. About 10 clips have FX (stabilization, levels). GPU has 16GB VRAM, V23 takes 9,5GB when loading and 17GB when playing back the timeline. V22 takes 8GB when loading and 14GB VRAM when playing back. This is just what is taken, does not mean it cannot play with less VRAM as the GPU can share system memory, typically on this project 2GB of shares memory is reported being used.

VEGAS tries to use as much VRAM as is available for caching these days so it doesn't go wasted. I can't say I can do anything more with my 12GB card than I could with the 8GB one I had until a few weeks ago but everything is somewhat faster.
