VP23: Still need to use Legacy AVC decoding to avoid Memory Runaway

RedRob-CandlelightProdctns wrote on 10/7/2025, 9:52 AM

Both editing and rendering a project yesterday in VP23 -- found that memory still kept creeping up unless I enabled legacy decoding. *sigh* Rendering used less of the GPU (%) and I do believe slower (didn't measure.. was late), but I knew it wouldn't crash.

Any hope of that runaway RAM situation getting snipped so we can stop flipping that setting back and forth?

Which of your computers has this issue? For memory is it ram or VRAM or both?

Runaway ram reports aren't universal but you're not alone. What's the common factor I wonder.

You know this isn't new... long thread from April with VP22 here where we all discussed it.

Watching Windows performance monitor just watch the RAM utilization going up and up and up. Does not happen when using legacy decoder.

There have been a lot of changes since 22 so I wasn't sure if the issue is the same. The LUT Fx leak is fixed, for example?

Did you have any success with official support?

Didn't back in 12/2024 (that thread above). @Reyfox saw identical behavior in that thread. Both of us have AMD GPUs, his is way newer.

I'll reach out again while I'm still in my slow season and see if we can make headway on this.

It's on my RX470 computer, yes. Haven't checked the other one yet.

Thanks for letting me know. I was wondering if this issue was resolved in version 23. Apparently not.
Here in Vegas Pro 22, I have to close and reopen the program every 30 minutes or so, because with the VRAM bottleneck, RAM is used up until the entire system crashes.

It's not a plugin/LUT issue or anything like that. Here, with a simple 1-minute timeline, if I watch/playback about 15 times without any effect, it already consumes 12GB of RAM + 32GB of RAM. 😥

NOTE: The "Enable legacy AVC decoding" option uses 50% of the GPU's VRAM. However, over time, VRAM usage still increases and there are some issues... when I enable it, playback stutters and the program frequently crashes.

I've already tested every possible option in Vegas. The only solution is disabling GPU acceleration. However, playback is poor; when I apply any effects, playback becomes impossible. Proxies aren't my thing; I work with weekly projects/deliveries of 200GB of files.

I hope this problem will be resolved definitively someday. There's no point in installing 64GB if Vegas will still consume all the memory after a while.

Here is what I wrote in 12/2024, which was for VP22 B122, which was an earlier build of VP22..

I edit 10bit 422 4K all the time. I'll use BorisFX, CGP, titles and have never had any issues. But then, most of my videos are under 15 minutes.

I don't have NeatVideo (I'll use BorisFX), and still render whatever I like. Yes, GPU RAM can get close to my 12GB, but it has never stopped me from working or rendering using AMD VCE.

Yip. That's been the issue and same as my findings.

Unchecked (not using legacy) is more stable and smooth playback, but have to keep PerformanceMonitor up and make sure to close/open Vegas to clear RAM. Also have to remember to toggle this before a long render or the render will likely fail from memory exhaustion.

Checked (using legacy) will give a reliable render and not consume the RAM, but is a much less stable and less smooth playback experience.

@RedRob-CandlelightProdctns Check the thread I made the other day. I'm having the same issue and turning off Dynamic Ram Preview seems to release the Vram. Turning it off has been the only way for me to use Vegas without the bottlenecking, otherwise all my drivers start crashing and my PC dies. I included a video there showcasing the leak. I'd love to know if you see similar results.

@chell I'll check it out. I haven't paid much attention to Dynamic RAM Preview in several years -- used to set it to 0 BC ppl said it would be more stable. More recently toggling the Legacy Decoder is what I dance around with to get through my work.

I just read your thread -- my report is not with VRAM, but system RAM which keeps climbing (and not releasing) during playback, or render, if "use legacy decoder" is not enabled.
