VP8 performance under Vista x64

Only yesterday I complained about not being able to find the RAM buffer sweet spot, and slow HDV renders in 32bit mode (up to 45% of my quad QX6700 resources) when compared to 8bit (or V7) 100% CPU usage.

Well, having 4GB RAM total, I set the buffer for the max allowable size (1022MB) and now it renders with 100% CPU usage under Vista x64, with 32bit on! This doesn't work under XP, so...could it be the code is beeing slowly optimized for a 64bit environment?

Vegas 8 does not support Vista 64 yet.

So it sounds like 32-bit mode is really memory hungry!

What are the render times for these settings. You'd think that 100% CPU usage means a faster render, but you'd want to see time trials to prove it.

Wouldn't it be handy to have a render dialog box that allowed you to switch bit depth settings, flush the ram cache, and adjust the ram cache size, all in one spot?

Vegas 8 does not support Vista 64 yet.

The same could be said for x64 XP Pro, yet it runs just fine. Or it could be said that Vegas 7 didn't function on x64 XP Pro - yet it did for me without a single issue.

I'm willing to bet that it runs just fine on 64bit Vista, this just happens to be specific to his machine.

I tried the rendertest_hdv.veg and at 8bit, have the same results as under XP. With 32bit video though, Vegas crashes (sooner or later); before it does however the estimated time is below 3 mins (QX6700). The same happens when I change the RAM buffer to 511MB. With 8bit video, it's almost exactly 120 sec (with 66 processes runing under Vista). I guess in a more "quiet" environment, it's be the same or better than my XP result of 1:48.

Has anybody successfuly completed the rendertest_hdv.veg with 32bit floating point video set, under Vista x64?

I'm running vista 64 and I've done the render test with V8... it got much the same as V7 which was 108 seconds if I remember correctly for a Q6600 (I'm overclocked to 3Ghz).

But I find that V8 is overall much slower than V7 and some strange ways. The smartrender speeds things up pretty good, but then that's offset by a pretty major slow-down in the rendering of parts that need to be recompressed. So much slower in fact that I can render faster in V7 without smartrender.

Hopefully they'll get this fixed up on the next patch.

BTW: I'm not sure if V8 is compatible with 64 bit systems yet... but there sure wasn't anything that said it wasn't.

OK, so I did the 32bit floating video version of the rendertest-hdv.veg in just 2mins 28sec (148 sec) under Vista x64, for the first time without crashing (I set the RAM dynamic preview buffer to 511MB and will leave it like that).

Now to the real stuff...

A bit of semantics, but oft-times a company will say that their product is not supported under XYZ. They mean that they feel no obligation to help you.

I think that's the situation with Vegas right now.

Running VP8 under Vista 64 -- Q6600 w/4 gigs 800mhz Ram.

Rendertest.veg
32bit - Dynamic Ram 1024 - 4 threads: 2 min 42 sec.
32bit - Dynamic Ram 1 - 4 threads: 2 min 40 sec.
8 bit - Dynamic Ram 1 - 4 threads: 2 min 12 sec.

My experience is that all Dynamic Ram settings above zero work just about the same,
