VP8b, QX9650 Quadcore & jerky video preview

Hi,

I have a new and very fast PC (btw, the new rendertest runs in 1:22). During this rendertest all 4 cores runs at 100% - great.

However, when I 'm editing plain vanilla SD (just some slight color correction and pan/crop on two video tracks), the preview playback speed drops to about 11..18 fps (best/full). Looking at the CPU usage history can I see that only one of the 4 cores is running at about 30%, the other three practically just idling!!!

I have a lightning fast computer, but VP8b is not using the CPU resources fully during playing back on the timeline! During "render as", all 4 cores are humming at high %-numbers) and the renders are very fast. What is wrong with the playback? Are there any settings that can affect this? Does VP8 only use only 1 core for the playback render? I have played around with the ram assignment for preview, but without any results.

My specs are: Asus P5E3 Deluxe mobo, QX9650@3,82GHz, 4GB DDR3@8522Mbyte/s, FSB1600MHZ, 64bit WINXP, GPU: Asus8800GT/512MBram, Drive C (internal sata 2.0):74MB/sec, Drive J (FireWire 400, where all project files resides): 39MB/sec.

No other editing applications (else than DVDA and Cinescore) are installed on this computer.

I would like to use the processing power I have invested some heavy money in... One of my targets was to get realtime playback during edit - at least fair quality... And good ideas from you gurus ???

So far this system has been running without any hickups, but again I have not yet edited HD or used 32bit rendering. Will test these later...

Thanks' for any help!!!

Christian

yeha dude, theyre prety much all the same unless you have your drives raided..but even with that, once ur PF overloads, u notice the drop in frames then u have to jump back to preview or draft, then back into full... previe that is...

Sure enough vebgas is multithreaded when it comes to rendering, but for EDITING, its not...

Really? I'm using an old Pentium D 820 and both cores show close to equal usage during playback.

BTW Christian, that's a kick-ass setup you have there. Color me green with envy :)

well on my quad, the fourth core is teh only thing thats utilised when its simply playing back

Other times when i render somethign like MB2 or a non multuthreaded filter such as Dynamic noise reduction, the entire CPU block is only hittin a total of 25% Thats a lil over 6% each core.

Other times, when its rendering true Multi threaded filters or codecs, it hits upwards of 100%

Its nt 100% 100% of the time.. sadly...

if it was, then im sure our preview stutter ssues would be non existant..

as for ur system, its hitting 100% coz its only one core

Nope, dual core. And both cores are being utilized during playback.

Tried a HD and an SD project:
All 4 cores running equally.
[HD @ about 65- 85% depending on plugs included.]

I'm running a Quad Core Q6600, and I notice the same issues.
When it renders, I notice close to 100% CPU usage except when it encounters certain fades or effects applied to the track.
The preview during editing is quite slow and jerky.
I set it to a lower preview quality when I edit in order to get real time video.

what's your preview settings? I can preview several HD tracks with CC, track motion pan/crop & some others in the preview window @ 30fps @ preview - auto settings. That's with a Phenom 9600 @ 1.8ghz.
