VP9 - Preview and rendering problems

chiltern wrote on 5/11/2009, 3:49 PM
After installation of V9 I have the following problems (so far..)

Preview seems much slower, despite adjusting various settings, and sometimes just gives a 'red screen'.

Rendering to the Sony MP4 'internet 16:9' MP4 file fails with "An error occurred while creating the media file xxxxxxxxx.mp4. The system is low on memory......." message - even though there is over 2Gb memory 'available' at the time.

Rendering to a progressive 1440x1080 M2T file gives "An error occurred while creating the media file xxxxxxxxx.m2t. The reason for the error could not be determined'.. If the settings are kept as the default (HDV interlaced) then the render appears to progress successfully.

These problems occur on both existing (V8) projects using V9 - which still work correctly with V8, and with newly-created V9 projects.

The original media in each case is Cineform HD AVI, from NeoScene. System is a Core Due 2.4GHz, with 4Gb memory, running XP-Pro SP2.

In 9.0 I've seen this "low memory" error while rendering with multiple versions of Vegas open with nothing more than the Rendertest open. I think Sony is saying that there is a Vista patch to fix this. Cannot recall seeing that in 8.0C so how can it be Vista?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows Vista™ manages memory significantly differently than Windows XP. In some situations of high memory use by Sony Creative Software products, performance can suffer. The effects are more pronounced when working with media that requires large amounts of memory such as HDV.

Microsoft has released an update for Windows Vista that alleviates some of this behavior. More information on the update is available from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=938979

That update is included in Vista SP1.

Thanks for the Vista info, but - as I mentioned in my message - I am running XP-Pro SP2. There are no other userland apps running, and I have now confiirmed that the same problems occur with ex-camera M2T source files.

Yep, I'm getting the same problems rendering AVCHD 1920x1080 with 32-bit pixels. It works great if no recompression is required, but as soon as it actually has to render anything, it bombs within seconds on my Quad-core Phenom system. "An error occured while creating the media file xxx. The system is low on memory. You may be able to reduce memory usage by closing other applications." I too am running windows XP. I had hoped this release would fix the plague of rendering issues in 8.0 (bombing AVC renders on quad-core systems, for instance). Sigh.

64bit on XP64 renders fine with AVCHD 1920x1080 32bit pixel format - but it's slow as before on 8.0c - I enabled no recompress on long GOP renders in options - am I missing something on the no recompression? It still looks like it's recompressing the entire project to me.

After a bit more research - including certain other forums.., I realised that the 'Cineform problems' were with 32-bit VP9 as well as 64-bit, and I should be lucky that it worked at all...

So far, I have found that I can use NeoScene (latest version - April 14) with my projects and VP9 as long as I do not render to Sony AVC/MP4 or HDV 'Progressive'.

The "HDV 1080-50i Intermediate" template is missing in VP9, but I have used the "Default Template (uncompressed)" and then clicked on <Custom> and selected "CineForm HD Codec V4.8.4" from the dropdown menu, and then selected <Configure> and"High HD" etc .

I have only tested three relatively short projects (around 5 minutes duration ), so there may be problems with longer ones.. I did check my old 'test' system which still had an earlier version of NeoScene, and the CineForm codec <Configure> options were greyed out..

Rendering out to Sony AVC/MP4 and HDV 'Progressive' are still a problem, as I reported earlier.

Update:
I know I was tempting fate by posting the above... Now rendering to CineForm AVI fails with the "........system is low on memory......" error as well. I will have to revert to using Vegas 8.0c until this is fixed..

Just FYI, I upgraded from SP2 to SP3 to see if things were any better (as WinXP SP3 is 'recommended'), and all the problems were still there, and in the case of the "..........low memory .............." error rendering to Sony AVC/MP4 were actually worse. Under SP2 the error typically occurred about 75% of the way through the render, but with SP3 it occurred after about 1 second.
