VPro 17 will not open a certain VPro 15 file

I just upgraded to VP 17 and opened a file (work in progress), but it would not open completely.

History: It would open to about 66% then go into 'not responding' status. Then hang at that point, till I clicked on the screen, then it becomes a white screen (you can still see the UI), then I have to 'end program'. From a previous thread suggestion, I updated the graphics card software and now it will load to 98%, then white screen. Bottom line: .veg will not open. HOWEVER, VP 17 will open my other completed projects. Difference with this project is it contains many .mov clips from my Iphone (app.10GB). I have checked of 'enable quicktime' in 'deprecated features'.

NOTE: This file has always taken a long time to open (up to 1 minute, VP15). I have applied very little color correction and rotation of clip to this file. Also, all files in VP 15 go into a 'not responding' status for a very short time when I go to another window and come back to VP; and sometimes when I make adjustments in the timeline.

Does anyone have any other suggestion, other than to rebuild in VP 17?

Hello Bill,

If the project and files opened in VP15, they should in VP17, especially as you have enabled QuickTime via the "Deprecated Features" tab. You mentioned this project contains multiple iPhone MOV files - could you try just loading a few of those directly in VP17, to try and isolate whether it's the media file which is causing the problem, or the project file itself. If it's the actual iPhone MOV which is causing problems, could you share the MediaInfo details about the file for us to investigate?

As far as the "not responding" status when you switch away from VEGAS, we close the file, and reopen it when you switch back to VEGAS by default. You can change is behavior by deselecting "Close media files when not the active application".

Thank you for the 'closed file' answer.

I created a VP 17 file and added two events (appr. 60 clips) and some music. The file was saved, closed, and reopened without any problems. I will add the rest of the event files later today or tomorrow to duplicate the VP15 file that will not open. I will post what happens.

I have attempted to import additional files into VP 17 and there is a problem. When I attempt to import additional files Vegas will crash when I click 'import'. And once it crashed the computer (it rebooted itself). When I attempt to import a different event (same file type .mov) VP crashed when I begin selecting files (leaving out picture files) and before I clicked 'import'. Also, at some point I received a message that my 'Display driver fails to start. This occurred when I had a white non-responsive screen. Task manager was required to end the Vegas program.

After all this I rebooted, opened my VP 15 file, it opens as expected, albeit takes over a minute and goes into 'not responding' status for about 45 seconds before it begins to populate the screen. There is no problem with the VP15, only VP17

It would seem to me, the VP 17 has a problem with my graphics card drivers.

The next day: I attempted to import other .mov files not related to my project. They imported as expected. Then I deleted those files and then clicked the 'import' button to import the correct files and the system crashed. I only clicked the 'import' button and it immediately crashed, no files were selected.

Just to be clear, there are two separate VP15 files that contain the .mov clips that will NOT open in VP 17. Some .mov files can be imported into VP17, some cannot without the VP17 crashing or the computer crashing.

It looks like you have been able to isolate the .MOV file which cannot be imported into VP17 (i.e. they cause a crash) - could you share the MediaInfo dump of this, or better still, upload a copy for us to check out?

upload the .mov files? I can do that, but I don't think that is the problem. I did another test. I opened a NEW VP17 file and begin importing those same groups of .mov clips, BUT in reverse order. The two .mov group files that seemed to create a VP17 crash, were successfully loaded first, then I continued with the other .mov group files that were successfully loaded the first time. BOOM, the computer went black. Computer was still powered up, but black screen. I did this twice, first time with black screen, I had to hard boot the computer (after about 2 minutes). Second time, I received a white screen with opportunity to report to Microsoft what I was doing when the program crashed. My screen has lost it original resolution and everything (icons, fonts) are very large. I can change it back, no problem.

Note that none of this happens with VP15 using the same .mov files, but VP15 DOES seem to struggle to open the file (opening time appr 1-1.5 minutes). With all that has been said and done, it leads me to believe that it is not the file, but the relationship between VP17, my GTX1080 graphics card (drivers), and maybe the .mov files play a role.

Very strange. I've just checked on the Magix Community forum, which is similar to this forum and where I'm not a Mod. The Message button is there for me. @BillRankin - my only suggestion is to try a different browser to see if it makes a difference. I'm using Firefox.

My Vegas Pro can behave similarly to your description of V17, ie long wait to open a project, sometimes hanging repeatedly at the same or different %points of progress and requiring task manager to close Vegas. After multiple attemps it would though open. My laptop is an i7 6700, 16GB Ram, SSD drive for OS programs, spinning drive for media, unsure if using Intel graphics or Nvidia 960m. My project was 12 minutes long, media was all Red R3d 5k. In particular there was one short section in the film where I had different R3d files on 4 tracks, varying opacities and different pan/keyframes Ken Burns effect going on, that section would never render correctly. I ended up copying just that small section to a new project, rendering it to 4k, and dropping that 4k file into original project instead. R3d files are obviously a lot of work for PC/Vegas and IIRC mov are also demanding for Vegas. I cannot help wondering if your issues are, that even though your PC spec is good, in a lengthy project with many mov files, something is running out of resources. In the old days each new version of windows required more PC hardware resources to run, maybe the same happened under the hood that there is new coding in Vegas17 that reuires, perhaps significantly, more PC resources to work? Of course all this is only a theory of mine.

My .mov are numerous, even though they are only 30 sec to 3 minutes in length. Perhaps that is the problem. This is a long term project and I have time to experiment. Thank you for your response!

Also, I am convinced there is something about the graphics card, drivers that might make this VP17 demand more resources and crash. Time will tell.

@BillRankin: Based on your further experiments, it seems that the file itself is not the problem, but loading multiple files is. Could you please post the MediaInfo details of these files; details for how to do that are posted in this post by Nick Hope.

If the MOV files contain codecs which require the use of the QuickTime plugin, then the behavior you described seems possible, as we know we can only load a certain number of files through QuickTime. But the MediaInfo information should help clarify this. If not, I will request you to create a support ticket and upload the files through customer service.
