The advice given by SonyEPM is actually underpinned by sound technical knowledge. Even if you don't have to deal with the issues of what will legally go through a TV transmitter try to keep in mind what does look good, In other words what do you see in nature.

If in doubt ask yourself if you looked out the window would you ever see something like that. Television was designed around reproducing reality and mostly where you come unstuck is when you push things outside what can be found in the real world. Its only been in the last decade or so with computer based graphics that this has become a real problem.

That and marketing gurus telling engineers to make consummer cameras that are easier to sell because the images look so nice and bright.

Of course, which takes us back again to televisions out of the box are DELIBERATELY miscalibrated by the manufacturer because people have been trained to think brighter more vivid is what's "right" which is the same logic behind televisions in retail stores almost always being shown off in low light conditions to futher enhance a brighter more vivid unatural looking picture. Also most always it is the biggest most expensive sets displayed in the area of the store that has the dimmest lighting to further enhance the illusion. <wink>
