VV can't open my AVI

rllagas wrote on 9/16/2003, 12:31 AM
I have some AVI media from my Canon G3 digital cam.
I tried to drop them on the time line but only the audio is detected by VV.
I can play them using the windows media player.

VV can see AVI from my dv video cam.

Do these AVIs different from other AVIs.

May i send one file to someone who is willing to test.

These are the file properties:

audio
audio format : PCM
average data rate : 11.24Kb/sec
sample rate : 11.24khz
audio sample size : 8 bit
channels : mono

video
stream name : igiboy108.avi
frame width : 320 pixels
frame height : 240 pixels
play lenght : 7.0 sec
frame count : 105
frame rate : 15.02 frames/sec
data rate : 281.473kb/sec

Thanks,
rommel

It might be a codec issue.
In the options->preference make sure that the "ignide third party DV codec" is not checked and the tha "use micorsodt DV codec" is checked.

Hope it helps.

The Canon G3 is a digital fotocamera. The video could be mpeg or rather mjpeg.

Well spotted Alex!

Maybe the G3 came with its own software to read that particular video stream. Then, maybe, a way of saving the video stream as some "other" V4 readable video file - dunno?

Grazie

Try installing an MJPEG codec on your machine- free codecs here:

I believe the G3 uses quicktime compression. do you have quicktime installed on your computer?

Any free codec for Win98?

I checked on the G3 Manual......it says G3 video will be in avi/mjpeg format.
So it looks like it's an mjpeg format.....i just wonder why it came out with .avi file extension.......

is mjpeg a sort of avi file also?.....i'm confused.

anyway, i tried opening it with intervideo apps and rendered it again as AVI....now i can drop it on VV timeline.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Thanks for the link SonyEPM.......you are SonicEPM before right?

Hi Rommel,

You can think of an avi file as just a container. The codecs that you've seen mentioned are for getting at the stuff inside the container. DV uses one type of codec - you will already have a DV codec installed - hence you can drop DV .avi files onto Vegas. In the case of your G3, you need an mpjeg codec to decode the video stream inside the containing .avi file so that Vegas can see it. However, it looks like your intervideo apps have a builtin capability for reading mjpeg video.

Does the codec suggested by SonyEPM (I nearly typed SonicEPM - I've just spotted the name change 8o) enable Vegas to import the .avi file directly? If not, and if you don't want to convert using your intervideo apps, this mjpeg codec might work Morgan MJPEG

Cheers,

Scott

I was having the same problem with a little Aptik camera that shot video as well... got audio, but not video in Vegas.
Tried the Morgan Media codec as per Scott in the last post at:
http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/technicalsV3.htm
it was free for 60 days, so I gave it a shot, yep, all my words turned to pix... seems to work just fine in Vegas 3.0 at least....
I would not have found this had it not been for the helpful posts and clues listed on this board ... thanks to those posts, I've now taken 3 frustrating days and make them worthwhile..!
Thanks folks...

If I install the codecs from Matrox will any of them conflict with my Canopus ADVC-1394 capture card? want to be more safe than sorry.
