VV3 demo crashes and won't output sound in XP

I have been scouring the web and google.groups for days trying to find someone who has had the problem I'm experiencing, but I just have to chalk it up to Vegas Video 3.0 being relatively new.

I downloaded the 3.0c build 138 app off of this website, and ran it as a demo. The applications starts up fine, accesses video directly, a damned impressive looking suite, and I've used a few.

But it won't play any sound. In options->preferences->audio it gives me the choice of Audio device type (options are MS Sound Mapper, and Windows Classic Wave driver), but both default audio playback and recording device are grayed out of MS Sound Mapper. Audio appears to play, the monitor registers it visually, but nothing comes out.

Keep in mind, I currently have both Premiere 6.0 and EditDV, as well as numerous media players. I have no issues with sound playback on any of them. I cannot find any settings that have any effect on playback issues. None of them run while I am trying to run VV3.

Now the more nefarious problem:
Everything seems to work, so naturally I started trying to cut together a little project. Any time I go into the Tools->video or tools->audio menus, no matter what I select, I get the popup "an error occurred during the current operation. An Exception has occurred"

(yes, "Exception" is capitalized)

If I click details and get a bunch of info that coders and debuggers understand. If I click "OK" I get the message "Vegas30.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close..." and the app crashes.

Thanks,

Mike

some pretty hefty power requirements for your system. what kind of power supply are you using? underpowered systems often exhibit strange problems... and I've never heard of yours :D

since Vegas is the only problem app, you might also try un-installing and re-installing.

since lack-of-sound is a prominent symptom, I'd try installing the latest sound drivers.

don't ignore the power issue though... it's the first thing that comes to mind because of the nature of your problem and because of your system specs. I've fixed a lot of problems in the past year related to bad power. power requirements seem to be on the increase and system builders tend to use cheap parts when they can get away with it.

if you are wondering why VV would be the only program where your problem arises... it could be because VV is better utilizing available resources such as CPU, video, and hard drives, all of which are heavily taxed by Vegas.

No, power was not a problem. I am well set up with a 350w Enermax PS and can handle quite a bit more than the five drives I currently have connected.

Turns out that it was in fact related to the current SBLive drivers Windows XP released last month. My previous driver, and the current release from Creative didn't exhibit any problems, so I simply installed the current driver and everything, including the Tools menu problem, worked fine.

I hope my problem helps to solve the problem for others. I wish there was a particular sound card for video editing that could be reccomended, because most problems I have encountered over the years are related to sound cards, but the sound card you use has very little impact on the quality of sound you ultimately print to tape.

I'm sure it will be helpful. sometimes we need to be reminded that the 'latest' isn't always the best.

it's tough to nail down the sound issue I know. most of us just need something that will work right and won't screw up other areas of the system. surprisingly enough, I've had the best luck with cheap-o built in sound from Crystal, Creative, VIA, etc... of course as soon as you want to do recording or music you need something better, but I haven't had much luck with the Creative Labs line for serious work. they are best suited for the 'enthusiast' I think.

my best sound card was a Digital Audio Labs CardD Plus (OLD now) but for $550 it better be great!
