I have not used Premiere, but I find the scrub in Vegas very usable. I can zoom in and stop right on any click or pop I want.

Have you tried unticking the "use linear scrub range" under preferences? There is a big difference it how it reacts.

When using the Scrub control 'bar' (the playback rate control bit), if you hold down Ctrl you get very fine adjustment of playback speed. You can press and release Ctrl at any time while you are using the Scrub control for fine or coarse adjustment. Coupled with the Alt+Arrow key (moves the cursor by one frame at a time on the timeline, regardless of zoom level) and you have very precise control of cursor position.

And don't forget the JKL keys (by the way, holding down K before hitting J or L gives you play speeds of +/- 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 1.0, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75 & 2.00 - instead of just 1.0, 1.5 & 2.0. Once in this 'fine' mode, you can let go of K)

Hi DaveT2-

First, don't get me wrong - I really like VV3 and use it above all else, and I own Premiere/Storm and it is not even on my system anymore.

There are some basic areas where VV3 falls down. Overall, VV3 is better, far better, than anything I have seen or used for DV in/out/web out.

VV3 is almost like a scientist who built the greatest car in the world but forgot a couple of the basics that are needed to operate. Audio scrubbing is just one of those things. The car might still be a hotrod, but you need to adapt to it.

In the case of audio scrubbing, the basic problem is that whether you are scrubbing in forward or reverse is entirely dependent on where your cursor is. If you are on the left of cursor it is reverse, right is forward and on the cursor is stop. Plus, there is acceleration that depends on how far away you are from the cursor. Impossible!

The way it should work is that the audio scrub follows the mouse or arrow keys as quickly and accurately as possible. Cursor should follow and set on where you stop.

It is/was a design decision that I personally don't like, but who knows? Possibly there is a better way. In many ways VV3 found those better ways which is what makes this program outstanding.

Well I didn't realize Vegas had any scrub at all and indeed you can do recaptures right from the Media Pool.. you learn something every day..

But my point about Audio Scrub in FCP is still valid and equals all the comments since. What we really need is a realtime scrub that does not change pitch.. Just take a look at FCP and how it behaves when you move the cursor back and forth.. or hell, take a look at SoundForge - drag the mouse left and right in the grey bar just above the time ruler.. It acts more like a CD player scanning than a record wowwing and fluttering.
