VV4 and 5.1

I'm currently using VV3 and DVD workshop with good results, but the idea of making a DVD with 5.1 DD parades through my mind like two seconds of video in loop playback.
So those of you that have made the upgrade, tell me.
Can I encode 5.1 DD with just VV4 or do you need DVD Architect the demo and the comparison chart make things a little fuzy.
If I can encode 5.1, what is the output format ie mv2 or ac3.

you can only use the AC3 plugin if you have DVD Architect aswell, the outputted format is Ac3, you can burn to a DVD and the DVD player will pay in full 5.1
Beleive me, its worth going for the AC3 plugin, the possabilaties are unreal as the whole soundtrack is 5.1 keframeable, you can tell vegas which speaker and at what time you want the sound to go to, you can even preview the whole thing in real time 5.1(if your soundcard and speakers allow)imhaving a ball of a time here:>)

If you are doing surround mixes for DVD, I highly recommend checking out the Dolby Surround Mixing Manual:

Thank you for that answer, EPM. I found one sentence right away, which told me that this is a place for learning good habits:...don't use the surrounds to distract the listener's attention away from the story.
One could exchange "surrounds" with just about any FX, transition, zoom, cut ... anything.
My eleven years old have started complaining that all her friends have wide screen television, DVD players and dozens of speakers spread around the sitting room. I suppose within a year I'll be sorry if I don't upgrade to the full Vegas + DVD package now.

I figured you'd be one of the first to upgrade Tor. Yeah, I'd say upgrade now ; you knowing VV3 so much better than I, you'd probably dig it even more than I am...and I'm DIGGING it ! After the new wheres off a little I'm going to be messing with 5.1 surround (I've already got the sound card to support it) and I'll probably need your help getting it going...so yeah, you should upgrade now : )

Glanced at the Dolby manual. Is the Dolby Model SDU4 Surround Decoding Unit a must have piece of hardware in order to use the Surround capability in Vegas? I was under the impression that it was all "self-contained".

With VV4 & DVDA I believe it is self contained from the aspect of feeding in 5 or 6 channels and getting an ac3 audio stream. Somewhere along the line you have to have something that decodes the ac3 file (which appears as 2 channels to a regular stereo setup) into 5.1 surround to hear it in 6 speakers, & that's the only function I know where you'll need a decoder, software or otherwise.

It can be present in hardware form with some soundcards, as well as some stereo recievers/amps, and some DVD players. Most often with PCs you'll get a combo of some hardware support plus a software decoder. The model mentioned appeared to do this in a stand alone box is all.

Just catching up with posts regarding VV4 & 5.1 Surround having upgraded yesterday. Now I am a little confused.

I was under the impression that you woulddn't necessarily need DVD Architect to enjoy the 5.1 option.

I won't be getting a DVD burner yet but will be doing VCDs and video. Will the listener enjoy the benefits of the surround under these circumstances?

Will I be able to properly encode and render without DVD Architect?

As always any help much appreciated.

You can do 5.1 projects with V4. But to encode to Dolby ac-3 you need DVD-Architect (or the ac-3 surround plug-in). Otherwise I think Vegas will just render to multiple .wav files and I don't think that will get you to where you need to be. Others here may know different.

I guess you could also try rendering to wmv9 with 5.1 but I doubt that will play back on anything but a PC.
