Warning!! ADVC-100 incompatibility

Do not buy -- I repeat DO NOT BUY -- the ADVC-100 analog-to-digital converter if you have a Texas Instruments firewire card.

I did today and made a mistake. I just hope the store will refund my money instead of just give me credit. They only refund for defective items, but I think this qualifies as defective.

Should have looked closer at the Canopus website because there it says at the bottom "The ADVC currently has compatibility issues with Texas Instruments firewire cards."

Sure enough it does. I started it up and it froze my system over and over again.
I called Canopus and asked what gives and they they'll have a fix in about 2 months. Anyone with a Texas Instruments chipset should not buy this thing.

I'm working on 3 completely different computers with different IEEE cards, but guess what? They're all Texas Instruments, which I suspect a LOT of people have.

This truly stinks. I wish someone could have warned me.

Does anyone have any suggestions for another converter in the same price range? I heard Dazzle is not that good and Sony DVMC-DA2 was discontinued. I need this ASAP for a project.

works with my TI chipset laptop from Toshiba and I have 2 cards at work with the TI chipset that work too. Might be cheaper to replace your car with a Orange Micro, Western Digital or IOgear cards, my IOgear card uses a Nec chipset.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron lapton with a SIIG dualport firewire card (Model #NN2612). I would like to hear from anyone with a SIIG card who has used the ADVC-100. Is there a solution or should I chuck the card (or the converter)?

Exactly which card are you using that's working so well? Maybe I'll get that one.

With the SIIG card and Vegas Video I am able to get an image in the capture window from my VCR deck but all the options are greyed out and everything else on the screen is frozen. I have to reboot every time in order to get out.

At one point the thing actually captured but there was no audio and I wasn't able to duplicate it. Ideally I would like to keep the ADVC-100 and get it to work because I've heard great things about it, but it seems brain damaged with this card.

I've got a Texas Instrument Firewire card and it works with the Canopus ADVC-100 without a problem. On the Canopus Website, http://www.canopuscorp.com/products/advc100-issues.php3, it explains that the problem occurs with D-Link IEEE-1394 cards using the TI TSB12LV23 chip and is not known to be a universal TI problem.

My dell Inspiron 8100 built in firewire port is a TI chip, and my Desktop firewire card likewise has a TI chipset. Both work just fine with the Canopus ADVC. In fact, it is one of the few computer components that I have bought that worked "right out of the box"--absolutely no glitches!

Thanks for everyone's feedback. I'm going to go back and fidde with my ADVC-100 some more to see if I'm doing something wrong.

I just spent 1.5+ hours today with Canopus tech support and we tried every connection under the sun. I must have a defective unit which I'm going to exchange Monday.

In addition to the SIIG card, I re-installed the original Dell firewire card that came with my Inspiron. That didn't work either so there's clearly something wrong.
