WARNING: HUFFYUV will not install in Vista

John_Cline wrote on 2/12/2008, 4:52 AM
Well, I hit a snag in my migration to Vista64. I can't get the HUFFYUV codec to install. Not surprising really, since the HUFFYUV codec hasn't been updated in years.

I've searched the net and I'm not the only one having this problem and no one seems to have yet figured out how to get it to work. In the meantime, I can continue to work in WinXP. Too bad though, Vista has been working quite well.

Interesting...
I have mine located in
%\windows\SysWOW64

and under 32bit
%\windows

Any of that a help?

I've not tried this command- but perhaps with a mod it might work for you?
[rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection Defaultinstall 132 %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Install:\huffyuv.inf ]

Kenny,

I tried that command line earlier today. Are you saying that you have gotten HuffYUV to work in Vista64?

Give me an explicit test you would like me to do - and I will try it!

I'll reboot into 64 now...

[forogt to say - for those who don't know:]
You need to install it a-la 32bit methods, because the Vegas, the host, is 32bit, and thus will need to address a 32bit assembly. I did not need to do any special compatibilty installations, but could be a worthy pursuit for those who have not got a working install. But to answer your question - Yes, I am saying I can render using HUFFYUV in Vista64

I work in an x64 environment so deal with two sets of CODECs, those available to 32-bit applications and those available to 64-bit applications.

So for example, Vegas, which is 32-bit, uses the 32-bit pool but VirtualDub x64 uses the 64-bit pool. It's not possible for a 32-bit application to use the 64-bit CODECs and vice versa.

It sounds like something similar is happening in Vista, the usual right-click "install" is probably attempting to place the CODEC in the 64-bit pool, which will make it unavailable to Vegas.

But... shhh... you could always try installing the 64-bit version of HUFFYUV. You didn't hear that from me, OK? ;-)

huh? The last sentence does not make sense. You agree about 32 seeing 32 assemblies, and 64 seeing 64 assemblies. Then sugest Vegas(32) to try and see 64bit assembly....

All I know is I have HUFFYUV working fine in Vegas under x64 Vista

The most popular 64-bit HUFFYUV install (which was designed for installing on 64-bit OS) contains both assemblies and will put them in the correct locations.

Hopefully that is a little clearer.

Surely that's not all you know? ;-)
