Warp thrust effect

Hi, I would like to make a 'thrust effect' behind a jet, for example what you see behind the jet thrust from film 'true lies' that heat wat is making the picture a bit blurry like warp (on a small area).
does any one know how to do that with V5, or an other software?.
I have tried a combination of 'spherize lightrays an blur effects' on vegas, but it doesent come out well as I want it to be.

I'd do a displacement map on it. Try duplicating the event on a track above it, add the displacement map to that one (maybe use a stock video like Psycho Ripples.avi as the map). Then lower the opacity to give a shimmer effect.
