WAV from Zoom H2 problem

UNI JonC wrote on 2/27/2013, 2:52 PM
I've recently been having an issue with Vegas Pro 11 - 64bit....

I place a 44.1/16bit WAV file created on a Zoom H2 recorder on the timeline and the audio jumps around every 1 second exactly. And the waveform on the timeline reflects this in different ways depending on how far you are zoomed in. At one point it just looks like every other second there is no waveform (even though there is sound), but when you zoom in more you do see a complete waveform, that seems to reflect the difference in audio as is jumps around.

It doesn't matter what my project settings are either, Normally I have audio settings and 48k/24bit, but even when I match the Zoom WAV file settings, 44.1/16, it still has the same problem.

It's very strange. It didn't do this before, and I don't recall what may have changed with the computer to cause this. I have uninstalled Vegas, cleaned the system with CCleaner, and reinstalled Vegas, and this has made no difference.

I have searched these forums and the interwebs and found nothing similar.

Help!

In what way does the audio "jump"?

Dave,

Each second it's like there is a jump cut to another part of the file. I'm rendering a big project right now, but when it's done, I'll see if I can render an example.

are you on an external drive by chance? If so, please give the specs. There is a known issue with 24 bit wav files on external usb drives.

- Does it PB normally from the Zoom?
- Have you tried PB without video?
- Tried other audio applications like Sound Forge?
- Can you post a screenshot of the waveform as well as an audio sample?

This is on an external USB drive, although it is a 16bit file.

The PB is normal from the zoom.
Yes, I've tried playback without video, same result.
I've tried the audio in Reaper, and it playsback fine, as expected.

Although today the condition has changed somewhat...if you listen to the audio clip, it now has silence every other second. But the waveform is still showing as it had yesterday...with blank spots every other second, but when zoomed in closer, complete waveforms, but reflecting different sounds every other second.

I'll try dragging this WAV file to a not USB drive and see what happens.

I have had this problem with wave files (not from a Zoom) that I had on a USB 3 external drive.( a seagate 3TB drive). Moving it to a different drive solves the problem, but also converting the file to AIFF on the same USB drive solves the problem.

Indeed copying one of these files to an internal raid setup solved the problem. I have too many files to either convert to a different format or move to a non USB drive, so I don't consider those reasonable solutions.

Is this some sort of bug with Vegas?

yes, as I stated in my first reply. I've had to switch to 16-bit wav files in recording (although yours is already 16 bit, which is weird). Another workaround is to drag the file to an internal drive, rerender it to flac or some other lossless format, and put that back on the ext usb 3 drive. My issues are also with usb 3 drives. Very odd.

So, is this a bug in Vegas?

Seems like it. Can you play the wav in another application successfully, like windows media player?

It plays fine on windows media player, reaper, audacity, vlc media player.

I am also unable to use .wav files from my Zoom H2 in Sony Vegas. I don't know if it's all .wav files or just those from that recorder.

The symptom you describe sounds the same as I experience with these files.

I am able to successfully play these files in all players I have except Sony Vegas.

I have to convert the files to another audio format in order to use them in Vegas.

Have you tried to record at 16bit 48kHz? I beleive the H2 can record at this sample rate.
