Wavy Lines during Screen Motion

VideoFreq wrote on 2/27/2016, 9:29 AM
I have a question that the ASUS forums don't seem to address and wonder if anyone here has had this experience.

When I upgraded to an ASUS R9-390 card last October I also purchased two ASUS PB287Q 4K monitors. They display at 1080p - 60hz. After a couple of months or so I noticed that during video previews or when scrolling up and down either screen that these wavy lines appear only where there is data. The lines are not always in the same place, and are mostly only visible when and/or where there is motion, e.g. when viewing previews in Vegas, only the preview window has the wavy lines. There are no lines when there is no screen motion. See this link for examples:

I had to use a held held device to record the effect, because when recording with Camtasia, the lines don't appear, which is probably a clue. I don't think its the monitors, or the cables or any software and I have the latest download for the R9-390. The lines appeared regardless of the three drivers or software used in the card. Nothing is overclocked. The cables are display port. If I shift any affected window to the other screen the lines occurs in the same place usually or may shift.

Any suggestions? Is it the card?

There is a check box in Vegas Preview settings, I think it's called Wait for vertical Sync that may help when enabled. I use an Asus Fury X but also had it with the R9 290 cards on my Dell 27" 2k monitors. I am not at my PC at the moment but I think there is a similar setting in the Control Center too.

I checked the box and it didn't affect it in Vegas. Please note, this happens when Vegas is not running or even loaded. such as when viewing e-mails or scrolling the news. It happens with any browser, any program.

Does this happen on both monitors? If not can you swap display ports on the card and see if the problem stays with the monitor or the port?

Is the monitor refresh rate set the same as the display adapter in Windows Display Properties?

Do you remember whether this started after a driver update?

VideoFreq wrote on 2/28/2016, 11:59 AM
Yes, it happens on both monitors. I have used the same open window and drug it to the other monitor and the same thing occurs, with the lines sometimes shifting from the middle section to the top. Sometime not moving at all.

My original R9-390 driver software was a BETA version and only earlier this month was a newer version released and installed, but it did not eliminate the issue. Neither does swapping display port cables. I have played with monitor settings as well to no avail.

I am pretty sure its in the graphics card. I am going to try uninstalling the drivers, run in SAFE mode, see what happens and then reinstall.

Wavy lines on motion usually means that you are incorrectly resizing interlaced footage. Are you using interlaced video?
VideoFreq wrote on 2/29/2016, 8:51 AM
This happens without Vegas, on any screen, with any window open, such as a news feed or a viral YouTube clip or a flash video advertisement. Just scrolling an open Word doc causes these wavy lines to appear - wherever there is screen motion.

I am appealing to my fellow Vegas Protians since editors are concerned with everything in their machines, and may have had this issue. I can't find anything in the ASUS forums.

Does this happen at monitors native resolution too? Is your power supply strong enough for the system?

Are you talking about wavy lines in that the edges of the image kind of squiggle on any movement? That effect is caused when interlace lines are resized improperly. What happens is that the interlace comb aliases when it is resized. There is a really easy recipe to see this in Vegas. Put an interlaced video clip on a timeline. In the project properties, select "no deinterlace method". Resize something. A resize to half size will drop every second line and look fine, but any other resize ratio...whoa! Look at 'em squiggly lines!

I see this every so often on posted videos on YouTube, Vimeo, et al.

These lines have nothing todo with editing or encoding what so ever, please look at the video. These are issues with either the card, the driver or the monitor.

Sorry, yeah I just looked at the video. I was completely off.

I see your monitors are set to 60hz. The problem might go away with a higher refresh rate.
VideoFreq wrote on 3/7/2016, 11:44 PM
I tried changing the refresh rate to 59, back to 60 and even 75 Hz. No difference.

Regarding the power supply, its 850 watt Corsair. I have 6 Barracuda Drives (78W), an EVO SSD (1W), a USB drive (5W), 2 optical BluRay R/W (30W), and of course the the MOBO (~ 275), Case Fans (30W) and the R9-390 (300W): for a total of about 720 W. With 850 max, is 130 watts enough "headroom"?

Also, I reinstalled the drivers, but stopped short of re-installing the card. Someone suggested new cables but would they be faulty on both monitors on both screens? I think its the card. Any other suggestions guys?

In your initial post you mentioned that the 4K monitors are displaying at 1080; does the screen tearing happen at their native resolution and unscaled text too?

The 850W PSU is a bit on the tight side but I doubt it's cause of it.

Thanks Old Smoke for the help. By trying your suggestion to try it in native 4K resolution, (which didn't make a difference), it did lead me to solve the issue. And not only that but internet window scrolling is so much more smoother than before, as I remembered it used to be.

Here is what the problem was. Last winter, I converted to an ASUS R9-390 from a nVidia QuadroFX. nVidia as many of you know uses 'nView Properties' so that you can have unique screens on each monitor. As I was fussing with the 4K resolution I noticed that the graphics card did not like the nView screens and so I started looking for some higher res screens.

I finally settled on background pic, went back to browsing and viola! I have duplicated the results by going back. So it appears fixed. Thanks all for your help!
