I'm looking for a notebook computer--very basic. All I want loaded on it is Windows XP Pro--nothing else (not for editing video). Where can I find such a beast?
I've been looking at some of the Desknote options of Asus and ECS. Built with desktop components, no battery. Interesting idea. Prices aren't quite as low as I would hope, but maybe if this concept takes off, they'll be more competition, and price/performance ratio will get better.
Look under "Notebooks," then "Desknotes" under www.pricewatch.com.
I'd love to see someone make an affordable "lunchbox/briefcase" desktop case with standard Micro-ATX components and a built-in keyboard and LCD screen, that's designed to be folded up and carried with you. Commercially available ones like this are obscenely expensive, for no particularl reason that I can see.
Any idea what price range you're looking in? I know Dell has deals all the time where you can get basic machines for around $700-$800
Also you might want to check this site, they list all the daily deals from dell....as well as a lot of other great deals at other stores. http://gotapex.com/deals.php
Brian, thanks! I'll give Pricewatch a try! You're right. I would have thought that by now the price of notebooks would have dropped considerably. <sigh>
Jason, I was hoping for something no higher than $700. I could be way off, though. I'll check out gotapex.com, too! Thank you!
Cheap laptops are popping up all the time on www.techbargains.com. That's where I found out about my Dell 2650 last year ($700, including DVD/CDRW drive).
