Way OT: Political. I hate sequels.

I would just like to clarify my statement regarding current day America. Yes Bob, we may still love the American people. It's their current political masters whom we have growing distaste for. Americans, as in 'ordinary people', are the most generous, courteous and kind hearted people one could wish to meet. How sad though, that they are so easily led astray when it comes to waging war. It's commonly called, "Patriotism". Unfortunately, the American people always take it to extremes. It's exactly the same sort of unbridled patriotism that brought Hitler to power and sustained him, even knowing that he was a monster in sheeps clothing. The American people always make the mistake of treating their President as some sort of God who can do no wrong.

Well you can go through life hoping people love you, but the certain thing is that you can't make them love you. It takes much less effort to ensure that people hate you.
Was there ever a time when any nation was "loved" by all? I guess "fundamentalist values" are attractive to people who never want to think. Not thinking is another form of death. Fundamentalism and religion are not synonymous, but too many people wish to make them so.

It's strange, but as an "ordinary " Australian I often have a rant about the evils of America (ie USA). But thinking about it I have never visited there and have actually only ever met about five US citizens in a long life. Without exception they all were really nice and intelligent people.(one was DSE at a Vegas seminar a couple of years ago, lol). The same goes for the posters on this forum too. Where do the weirdos come from?

There are weirdos in every country, out-numbered by the nice people. Never judge a country by its polititions (or its militants)! The people in the USA are great and it's a beautiful and varied country, even though many speak a funny version of English. In any place, it's the mob mentality that can get frightening.

I couldn't agree with you more, Serena. Trouble is, it's the mob in the White House we ought to be very worried about. Unfortunately, they're the ones who call the shots.

Group Says Iran Is 'Not a Crisis'

"Seeking to counter the White House's depiction of its Middle East policies as crucial to the prevention of terrorist attacks at home, 21 former generals, diplomats and national security officials will release an open letter tomorrow arguing that the administration's "hard line" has actually undermined U.S. security. "

The letter was successfully ignored by the mainstream media. I am sure most of you weren't even aware of it as a result.

Let's not forget that it was the MEDIA that sold the public on the invasion of Iraq on behalf of the Bush administration and they will do exactly the same thing when it comes to Iran. They didn't question the invasion and occupation of Iraq despite the fact that there was enough to indicate that it was pre-planned. The PNAC people determining US policy for hapless Bush wrote enough on their website to question their motives yet the groups website was kept from the public. These sickos had enough confidence in media complicity to leave the website up with "most" of the letters untouched. I really feel bad for the Brits who are dragged into these messes and don't even realize that it is the American media that have created the support for the US government to drag Britain into the gutter along with the hapless US victims in the public domain that vote for these people based upon lies. Lies corroborated by mainstream US media.

Interesting to note that Israel's recent foray into Lebanon may have prevented WWIII, at least for now.

???

By showing the Israeli people that their immense military superiority wasn't sufficient to keep them harmless at home against better organized forces such as Hezbollah, never mind real strong, competent, and motivated guys like Iran's military.

They have been 100% focused on "mine is bigger than yours" for such a long time, now they'll have to start thinking about practical solutions that may even involve other people's pride and survival too.

According to some of the local news media in Israel it was and is Israeli intelligence that is the source of information the neocons running the US government rely upon for their justifications. It was the primary source for the so-called "faulty intelligence" the US media allowed the Bush administration to get away with using to abdicate responsibility for the role of Commander in Chief (a first in US history) when it came to his decision to go to war against the Iraqi people.

Akiva Eldar wrote a good piece in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. In her article :

"But George Bush and his people, whose policies have contributed to the deterioration of Israel's national security, will not only emerge unscathed; their Israeli branch sic [the right wing led by Netanyahu, et al] will once again flourish on the ruins of the Galilee and be nourished by the army's failures. Yet their failed "democratization," which threatens the governmental stability of many states in the region, will bring to power a coalition that will perpetuate the occupation and legitimize transfer in the country that is (still) considered the only democracy in the Middle East. .................Bush and his advisers preferred to use the stick and skip the carrots. They decided to impose the democratic system on the Arab nations by force. There were no discounts and no exceptions, not even for the occupied Palestinian people or the minority Alawite government in Syria."

And in this article in the Jerusalem Post by Yaakoff Katz he stated:

"Defense officials told the Post last week that they were receiving indications from the US that America would be interested in seeing Israel attack Syria."

Find that statement or anything resembling it in the US media .
