Ways to edit in Vegas

peter-s wrote on 5/13/2017, 4:03 PM

The last years, I have always been editing with a mouse.
Actually have some hurting in my handwrist, so I think about different ways to edit videos.

Is anybody editing with tablet and pen? Trackball?
I´m thinking about using a wacom-style tablet, maybe its more easy to edit? What do you think?

Greets to everybody

FWIW,   Years ago I was having significant pain in my "mouse" wrist that eventually spread to my entire arm.  My solution was to get a second mouse for my left hand and switch occasionally.  Within a week the pain was gone, and hasn't returned.

I tried a pen & tablet, but found it too difficult to hold still.

unfortunately, the only wy you're going to find out what works for YOU is to try the various options.

1. get a better, perhaps ergonomic, mouse

2. wacom (i use one and love it, but people do complain about its use within vegas, notably dragging fades and the like).

3. shuttle contour, or pro. a lot of pro editors (many older ones especially) prefer this sort of device.

4. keyboard with built-in trackball/jog shuttle control.

for photoshop nothing beats a wacom.

Don't get a cheap and small mouse, but instead, ergonomic and 'larger' mouse (although probably a bit more expensive)... change the mouse after sometimes, and DO REGULAR BREAK after an hour. Get Shuttle Contour if needed too.

I post some of 'staying fit' articles, where I found on FBs or my health communities group in this thread: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/fit-exercise-for-us-who-sits-a-lot--104299/ as few notes, although I also welcome more sharing according to health on editing area.

I found some mouse/arm comfort with what may be considered a somewhat extreme approach. I replaced the armrest on my office chair with a small "platform," which makes the whole operation something like one of the old fashioned school desks. It is simply made from a piece of 3/8" plywood. It's the size of the mouse pad at the end furthest from me, and the rest of it is a little wider than my arm. This way, my wrist is not bent at the point where I use the mouse. A piece of Velcro between the pad and my platform keep the mouse pad from sliding around.

A further advantage is that it allow me to lean back and relax my back, as I don't have to lean into the desk to access the mouse. I use the mouse in my right hand and the Shuttle Pro in my left. The Shuttle Pro is at the edge of the desk closest to me, so I can reach it without leaning in.

Thank you for all your answers. Nice to read there are more solutions to get near painless editing/working. ;)
I´m sitting a lot in front of my computer, but I also do a lot of walking and cycling, at least 3 hours a week. And then there is also gardenwork.

I like the idea of using a Shuttle, are there big differences between Xpress and Pro Version? The scrolling of the timeline will be the most action to be used? Are there some more nice makros to be programmed to the buttons?

>>>The scrolling of the timeline will be the most action to be used?

I opted for a shuttle express after my shuttle pro died a few years back. I never used most of the buttons so I knew the express would be fine for me. The jog wheels and the two stops (enter key and space bar) get by far the most use. I also use a tablet and a mouse, I find they all have their functionality for different editing scenarios. I used to have Wacoms but I tried a Monoprice cheap clone once, when I was having problems with my expensive Wacom, seems I needed to reinstall the driver a few times a month. Pleasantly surprised by the Monoprice tablets. I've bought several, since they are so cheap and big, too. I have them for all of my computers.

Though at this point you may be primarily want the jog wheels, as you are reconsidering how you work, you may want to have the additional buttons of the pro vs the express, in the future, and the difference is only $30. Staples (surprisingly) shows it for $89.95.

I use all of the buttons on my pro, and have them all labeled. Even the ones that don't have the removable cap for inserting a label. I used a label maker and a little help from some Scotch Tape. Having them all on the Pro works for me, as I don't always remember what the hot keys are on the keyboard.

The most useful buttons ( trim left/right) you didn't assign. I have both shuttles, personally I prefer to work with the shuttle Xpress.

You'd have to prize my beloved COUNTOUR SHUTTLE PRO from my dead hand.

I have added VP MACROS to buttons to Prerender, New Track, L&J cuts, UNDOs and REDOs and much more: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/proxy/e0fa160969938581c3fb/?link=http%253A%252F%252Fwww.promoviemaker.net%252Findex.php%252Fnews%252Fitem%252F370-contour-design-shuttlepro-v2

I use the mouse and shortcuts for quick stuff, had a contour shuttle pro, when I moved form VHS, as I thought it would be essential, but never used it.

Love the Contour Shuttle. Makes editing easier for me.

"I thought it would be essential, but never used it."

Took me a while to get comfortable with it and to figure out which commands I wanted to program, but once I did, life got better.
