Even when using the WAVEFORMAT Extensible under Win2000, because of the bug in Win2000, you will not "get" 24 bits worth of data. Vegas correctly opens the device and the device will be opened correctly at 24 bits. Windows' KMIXER truncates the data back to 16 bit, though it is sent to Vegas as 24 bits.

As soon as I know MS has released the fix, I will post it here and every where else!!

I recommend XP. It is in so many ways better than Win2000. It fixes many bugs in the kmixer, not the least being the 24 bit recording issue.

Turn off all the GUI nonsense, and you have a very fast Windows platform.

As Peter has stated, XP works great right out the box, especially with audio. No need for service packs, like with W2K. It will do 24bit with VEGAS 3.0, ACID 3.0, and SF5.0 with WDM(Delta 66). I have had no issues with stability or audio quality using any of the aforementioned apps. If you have W2K/XP drivers available for your hardware, XP is the logical choice. I've seen XP Home Edition on www.pricewatch.com for as low as $64.00.

Hello,

>not the least being the 24 bit recording issue

Isn't true.

Facts:

- I tested with a -104 dB 1 kHz tone generated by Sound Forge syntesis.

- I Opened a new sesion in the Vegas, import the -104 dB 1 kHz file.

- I plug in loop mode (optical out to optical in) the RME Hamerfall.

- Play the file and record this file in a new track, and open this new file in the Sound Forge, maximize, and voila, the new -104 dB 1kHz tone.

If the MME driver had a bug with the 24 bit files, will be impossible record the -104 dB tone (Low level for a 16 bit is -96 dB).
