Weird glitches / vertical black bars in Vegas Pro 20.0 (Help!)

Timothy-Dhalleine wrote on 7/4/2023, 8:48 AM

Hello,

I am using MAGIX Vegas Pro 20.0 (Build 411). I am having a hard time rendering with an ugly bug / glitch that mostly appears in transition as vertical black bars, sometimes mixed with a green screen (see screenshots below). It appears and disappears very fast but enough time to ruin the quality of the documentary I am editing.

Those glitches also happen in the preview window, but their appearance changes everytime I render or reopen the program. I am editing 4K content with a new labtop, here is the information :

ROG Zephyrus G14 (GA402RJ)

Processor : AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS with Radeon Graphics 3.30 GHz

RAM : 16Go

I have looked on internet before buying and it is supposed to work perfectly for 4K edition. CPU acceleration is disabled in my preferences (I tried with/without, same bug happens).

I am struggling to solve this issue, I couldn't find any solution online so I hope you guys can help me. Thank you!

Best,
Tim

Are you able to share your veg file(projectfile) without the content so we can try it on our machine

Thanks for the reply, it seems I can't send VEG files here but I've uploaded it on WeTransfer so you can download it here (for 7 days) https://wetransfer.com/downloads/e51c999927d25239e394e8eb30836c4a20230704143408/0b59ff17cb5425b15b8a3abea3e025c820230704143417/0e8566

And yes I've just checked the video card drivers, all up to date.

Steve_Rhoden wrote on 7/4/2023, 9:58 AM

@Timothy-Dhalleine That is really odd. Never seen that issue before. And yes, that is a decent system you have there..... Thus the issue may be coming from those videos you have on the timeline.... Where were these video clips derived from and what format are they?.

Also scrub thru your project and make sure you don't have any unwanted effect hidden somewhere.

Timothy-Dhalleine wrote on 7/4/2023, 10:05 AM

Hey Steve! The videos are MOV format, 3840x2160 | 29,970 fps (definitely no unwanted effect seen, same thing happens when I start a new project)

@Timothy-Dhalleine

Based on your Project Properties and the number of unquantized frames on your timeline, I'd recommend some housekeeping. The red lines represent media events that don't start and/or end on a frame boundary.

Here is a screenshot of your project properties.

Change your Project Properties Ruler Format to match your Project Frame Rate and align at least video media on the timeline to a video frame boundary. Unless an audio CD will be your first and only output type.

I've had unquantized frames give decoders/encoders fits in the past.

Can you also give the exact place (time) where you see your problems?

Hello,

Thanks so much for your messages, that's very kind!

So @john_dennis I've applied the changes but unfortunately, those weird lines appear. They appear randomly (like here in the screenshots : I closed the program after the first screenshot, then it was gone but there were lines in other spots) : whenever I close and reopen the program, they appear at another place. And when I render the project, they will also appear randomly in the video, but not necesarrily in the same places than in the VEGAS preview...That's frustrating.

@Timothy-Dhalleine - I don’t know if this has been mention, but it appears you have a Project Wide FX. What if you remove it?

j-v wrote on 7/4/2023, 11:52 AM

I don't see those problems when loaded and filled your project on my laptop from signature.
Maybe a setting in Vegas can cause it, but therefore I cannot help you because I have no knowledge of the best AMD Ryzen and Radeon settings for this program, sorry.

@Timothy-Dhalleine

As a diagnostic procedure:

  • Set Options /Preferences/File I/O and Video tabs to match these panels
  • Shut down all Vegas instances
  • Restart your project
  • Render to Apple Pro Res
  • Report
john_dennis wrote on 7/4/2023, 2:46 PM

I replaced all the media in your project file with random UHD XAVC from a Sony camera and it rendered fine with both of my video adapters doing some part of the work.

Of course, the output was complete non-sense except for your text.

PS

There are less complicated ways to create a 3840x1781.9 mask.

Hello,

@john_dennis Unfortunately I won't be able to render the video now (I am traveling for 2 days) but I took your advice and changed the settings, and the bars disappeared in the preview mode : I am optimistic so far! Will let you know.

john_dennis wrote on 7/4/2023, 3:23 PM

Good trip.

Timothy-Dhalleine wrote on 7/7/2023, 9:19 AM

Hello @john_dennis so it rendered well in the format I typically use (MAGIX AVC/AAC Internet UHD 2160p 29m97 fps mp4.) - no more "weird bars" / glitches in the preview and rendered video.

With the settings you recommended me using, rendering is slower (less use of CPU) which is much better than glitches 😉!

Only as a way to conclude that, what do you think was the problem?

john_dennis wrote on 7/7/2023, 10:05 AM

@Timothy-Dhalleine said "what do you think was the problem?"

I had you disable decoding of media on the timeline with your GPU on Options/Preferences/File I-O/Hardware Decoder to Use.

Then I asked that you disable GPU Acceleration of video processing on the Options/Preferences/Video tab.

Doing that mostly removed your GPU hardware and drivers as a potential source of the anomalies that you were experiencing.

I also asked that you render to a different video format (Apple Pro Res) which can be used as an intermediate file and put back on the Vegas timeline for renders to different formats when the project is finalized.

You report that you were able to render to your expected final output Magix AVC/AAC.

Since you were "successful" without GPU enabled a reasonable approach would be to enable only decoding on the File I/O tab and do a test render.

Then, enable GPU acceleration on the Video panel and do a test render.

Ultimately, you could learn which function is giving you the errors. You could find a combination that will allow you to get your work done until you can find a good GPU driver, change your hardware, or find something on the timeline that triggers the errors, etc.
