Weird Microsoft Media Player Behavior

This is strange. For the last few days, since I allowed Microsoft to install its latest "security" update automatically (shame on me) Media Player does the following:

Any movie rendered with the default template for DV MPEG plays fine, but only starts to show the video portion about 5-7 seconds after the actual start of the video. The first seconds its a black screen. The audio starts fine, immediately. The video plays fine in Vegas and in every other media player. The original source file plays fine in Media Player before I work on it in Vegas. Most oddly, if I shut down (cold reboot) and then open the video, it plays normally. I would have thought is something in a particular file, but now its the last three in a row and doesn't matter if the source file was AVI or MPEG.

Anyone else seeing this sillness?

My media player works fine if I double click on the file first in explorer
or if it starts automatically but if I open media player first it hangs
everything up. direct x 9,0, media player 9 and all the security downloads,
win2k. Have to hit ctrl alt del to end program. I'm just living with it for now.
It works ok for render previews.

This may be a version 9 problem. The last few time I tried to download and/or view a video clip, mine did exactly that. I plays video for about 2 seconds, the I may get one still every 2 or 3 minutes. Audio always plays fine.

Have you tried asking the guys at WM Talk (http://microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/community/wmtalk.aspx)? Software engineers and product managers from the Windows Media Group frequent the forum, so you can usually get useful information out of them. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Shawn

you could always try a bit of leader footage in your project to let the player a/v synch.
cheers.

I haven't seen your sillyness, BillyBoy, but I keep seeing something else: Media Player only sees up to 4:42 of an .avi file, no matter how long it really is. It says the video is 4:42 and it plays 4:42 of it. The same file will display and play correctly on Vegas' timeline, but to MP it's 4:42 and that's it.
