weird mpeg problems - distortion

I have video material captured from DV tape and edited in Vegas 4. Now I wanted to render it to mpeg using DVD Architect PAL template (tried all sorts of bitrate combinations) and burn it to DVD-RW using Architect at first (tried other DVD mastering software). During the render process the preview window showed distorted picture on scenes with fast movement. Distortion looks like horizontal zig-zag bars evenly distributed from top to bottom of the screen (i have screenshots, don't know where to post them). Burning is finished ok. DVD looks ok on PC but on TV these scenes have flickering problems on this horizontal bars. What should I do to overcome this problem? I think I am doing everything the way it should be done, don't have any more ideas... Thanks, Goran

You'll always see wierd artifacts on the P monitor, PCs can only display progressive wheras the video is shot interlaced, when the two fields are displayed at ince on the monitor you're seeing two fields taken at different times displayed at once.

This dissappears on the TV because it's diplaying the fields once every 20mSecs the same as whe it was taken. The artifacts on horizontals are unavoidable results of how the image is scanned, because there is always some motion or the the edge is not exactly aligned with the scan lines, then at some point along the can line it falls in / out of the line leavinf a jagged edge. Watch of air television and you'dd se the same thing, not so much in staged studio shots as smoe care is taken to avoid getting these kinds of things in the shot, watch what happens to clothes with fine stripes or checks!

Turning up to a station for an interview wearing something like that usually got you a quick trip to wardrobe, no one seems to care much these days.
