weird stutter when fewer tracks

this is really messing with my head!
ive working on this project with some clients.i just started going 24/44.1 instead of 16.

the first session we had no problems.when we did the second session i started getting playback stutters,the weird thing is it only happened when very little was happening.i could understand if it stuttered when all 14 tracks are playing back at once but this only happens when one or two tracks are playing at once.

to me it defys all logic.ive tried changing buffers and switching project to 16 with no better results.

anybody ever seen this before?
suggestions,comments?
any help would be really great.

as an addition.
i added waves renaisance compressor on 4 tracks at second session.ive heard alot about crashes with waves and vegas.i removed the waves fx to see if it made a difference and it did not.anyway when it stutters no tracks with waves fx are playing.i guess it could have corrupted the project but still!,WHY DOES IT STUTTER WHEN ONE TRACK PLAYS BUT ITS FINE WHEN 12 TRACKS PLAY AT ONCE!

What kind of hardware are you using? Some cards have more trouble pumping out nothing than working, generally in the drivers.

im using a delta 66.never any problems before.
i messed around w/ it more and i found that when i moved the vocals to its own buss is when it started.if i mute the bus it plays fine.there is also a connection here w/ the waves compressor im using on the project,its the root of the problem.
but you know about this kind of thing?
why is it more difficult to pump out nothing at times than when working.perhaps ill look at my delta settings.im pretty sure i have some irq conflicts also.

thought it was the buss and waves but now still stuttering.cpu and ram are not working at all when stutter.
still looking for info. about dificulty playing back fewer tracks.i dont understand?
