What causes timeouts?

I just burned a dvd using DVDA 2 and all went well. Then when I tried to burn a second dvd with exactly the same settings to give me another copy of the same video it timed out.
Burned at 2.4 x. This happened to me last night with another dvd - and it has never happened before.

Do I have a bad batch of dvd's? Using the same ones from the same package as always.
Thanks for any replies.

It could very well be bad media. Media from some manufacturers is simply junk and just won't burn reliably. For DVD's I don't use anything except Taiyo Yuden.

Thanks Scott - the media must be the problem then. Interestingly , the pack contained 50 dvd's and it seems to be only the last few that are flawed.

that's possible. in one 50 pack I had the top 4 disks with a small crack in the middle. :) accidents happen. :)
