i use to render my projects and such to mpeg1 not knowing that it would be low quality

then i tried avi but it saved too big of a file. then i now render all my stuff to mpeg2. i don't know if this is the highest quality possible but it is for me. so if i want to make a vcd i just have to slap finished rendered vids to a disc but i render it as mpeg1 first.

what do u guys render your stuff as?

I keep my important archive as DV-AVI files so I don't lose any quality at all. I know the files are big but disk space is cheap these days.

If I'm making DVD's I render to MPEG2 using Cinema Craft Encoder Basic (CCE). My tests using Vegas' inbuilt MPEG2 encoder have compared well but I'm sticking with CCE for now. And it's faster.

I find Windows Media Video 9 (WMV9) to be the best combination of quality vs file size vs compatibility for my 320 x 240 online movies, especially now it's supported on the Mac.

If you're looking at archiving at near-lossless quality then Windows Media Video or DIVx give better results than storing your video as MPEG1 or MPEG2.

I think the prefered formats are DV avi, uncompressed AVI, and Sony YUV.

If space is an issue you should consider getting a new hdd.

Mpeg is a delivery format. Not something you want to work with.

Every project is mastered to DV tape, sometimes twice, and kept along with camera originals. Some avis are kept on hard drive but not all.

I keep all the DVD data - that's the DVDA2 .dar file plus all media which I input into that Project, including graphics and music/audio. Backed up to DVD as files. Then it's easy to reload and update any time.
