What does "video offline" mean?

I'm looking for a new video camera. I had a Flipcam that saved AVI files, but when I imported them into Sony Vegas Studio, they looked black, and the timeline showed the message "video offline." What does that mean? Can it be fixed?

1) What is the exact make and model of your "Flipcam"?
2) Download MediaInfo and post the details about your media files. AVI can use any of dozens of codecs.
