i use muvee autoproducer for "quick-and-dirty" projects. this is automatic editing software: give it the raw footage, it analyzes it, and produces a finished video for you in a style you've chosen. it works pretty well considering.

i also use dvdpatcher to overcome the limitation in MS3 (and VMS4) of creating 16:9 MPEG-2 files.

for general purpose photo editing i use paint shop pro 5, and thumbsplus 7 for managing my collection of digital camera images.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll check out some of these tools as my needs progress. I'm still kinda new to all this even though I have had the software for a year. Hard to find the time to do what I want! Pesky kids actually expect me to play with them from time to time instead of parking my rear end in front of the computer!! :o)
