What format?

PipelineAudio wrote on 2/2/2005, 10:43 PM
I dont know where to read about the advantages disadvantages and file sizes of each type, but Id like to.

I need to make a slideshow video that will fit on a single CD, its 15 minutes long. Some of the people recieving the disc will have mac, some PC, old and new computers. What format should I render to?

what settings?

Where can I read up on this?

Probably the most common file format for the different platforms is Real Media.

mpeg-1 will play on anything and at higher bitrates is very good, in fact I was told by those in the know it's better than mpeg-2.

Yeah, but the Vegas mpeg 1 encoder isn't that great. I love the quality of encodes from the Vegas mpeg 2 encoder, but mpeg 1 stuff from Vegas...yech!

the tmpgenc encoder is free for mpeg1 and very very good for mpeg1 ..

real media is awful for messing up peoples systems, settings and other codecs , plus spyware ... though now there are alternatives if you must see it .. i avoid it like the plague ...

mpeg1 is the most compatible with anything ..

Heck, MPEG one almost can come delivered on the back of a cereal box. Lots of set top players can manage it as well.
Quicktime is next in the line up, in terms of access.
Windows Media 9 will play on anything built in recent years, you can distribute a player with it too.
I'm with BJ_M on this one, avoid REAL. They shot themselves in the foot when they started the sneaky load techniques and using spyware as part of the program.

Amen on Real Player. Very subversive. Darryl

Thank you guys!

I see a 768 X 576 limit on the picture size for mpeg 1 if I used constrained parameters. Can I just ignore this?

NOT Real.

Most people I know will not load RealPlayer because of the spyware that it installs and for the problems it causes WMP and QT.

MPEG2 is much, much more sophisticated (read: better quality for a given bitrate) than MPEG1. WMV is much, much more sophisticated than MPEG2.

Anyone with a PC or Mac can now play WMV, or can with a codec download from Microsoft.
