As far as I know, VMS will not smart render h264/AVC in any available container, regardless of the file extension.

The reason to the best of my knowledge, is the issue of any Windows NLE to be able to re-index the extremely long GOP structure.

The best Windows solution I know of is VideoRedo h264 version, which is a remuxer, and is still under development.

It is important to note that a typical h264 GOP consists of many bipredictive and pyramid b-frames, and can easily reach 300-400 frames each in length.
Not an easy task for any Windows NLE.

On the other hand, MPEG-2 with a typical 15-frame GOP, and AVI, which is intraframe compression, smart-render with ease in Vegas.

Thanks for the info. I guess I will just have to render unless I can convert it to something that is lossless first.

If you're going to confine your workflow to Vegas, the answer is yes, and it's not that bad.
