What happens to my pre-renders?

Hey y'all,
Sorry but I couldn't find an answer to this when searching for "pre-render" and "prerender".
I have an 8 minute pre-rendered project (with enough effects etc to take close to an hour to render on a P4 3.06 HT) ready to PTT and I make 1 change in 4 seconds of it and i lose all of my pre-renders. Is there not a way to avoid losing all of those pre-renders?
TIA,
Randy

The simplest way to avoid this problem is by using the "Render to new track" option instead. Then if you need to change a small section, just cut out the new render and change that section on the original clip.

I wonder if I have something set wrong when rendering to a new track, because I get a lot of dropped frames when playing back the new track (as opposed to a very smooth pre-rendered playback) on my external monitor. If it makes a difference, this is all stills with pan/cropping.
Thanks for your patience,
Randy
