>>>People here sure like to jump to a lot of negative conclusions.... O.K. Who'll find the next fault?<<<
Not negative, just when you say Los Angeles/Hollywood and combine that with the statement "make big rewards" - well, ya gotta be around it for a few decades too see why that is.
>>>because I have something to say."
I thought that would be obvious....no?<<<
There's some very good directors that only do commerical work.
Lets face it, with maybe a handful of exceptions the Hollywood scene is devoid of ANYBODY that knows how to REALLY act. Many of the biggest grossing films are "action" movies where you have the likes of Sly, Arnold, Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith and others known more for one liners. Actors they're not. Contrast that to some of the classics where even "B" actors could act. Since actors are directed by directors, what does that say for the current crop of directors? Not much either. Of course the writing isn't that great either. Sadly, today's movies with a plot don't come along that often.
I wonder what would happen if you aproached it singlemindedly and would not stop like the terminator actually look at arnold first he wanted to be the worlds top bodybuilder and then succeed in acting if you saw the films he started with pumping iron hercules in new york all the critics must have said your avin a laugh but he ignored them and now after a succesfull acting career one of the top earners of all time he is going into politics married to one of the kennedys a lot of pooled resources there my moneys on arnie
If you want to be a director then go and be one and dont forget to give me a part when you succeed
Damn, this is fun, I have read every post.... Now my turn.
Started in TV when I was 15, (sweeping the studio). Worked my way up to Cam-OP. Paid for college degree number #1. Worked as Cam-op/Editor/Master Control/AD/Boom Op. Even was lucky enough to work on national shows and Ran around NYC as a ENG Photog.
But to "direct" no one would let me out of the techy world. So I went back to college for degree #2, (Healthcare). Bought my own GL1, then vegas.
Moral.....I was able to get some great work, meet some famous people, travel, but these were all someone else's pojects. Now my day job supports my wife & kids and I get to work on my OWN projects. I think of my self as a "director". Each project makes me better, someday I may retire from my day job! Keep the faith!
Is it a bit of a chicken and egg situation no one will give you a chance because they havent seen your work and no one will see your work because you havent been given a chance So I suppose the answer is you have to have potloads of money where you can make your own film and hope you can recover the costs or try to get grants from film organisations in which case you would have to have a very good idea of what your going to do and then sell it In fact I would imagine you would need to be a very good salesman and organiser.
I think that to be a director is what a lot of crew are going to aspire to and therefore how could you place yourself in front of someone with more experience ect ect I think the best way is to do it for yourself I think someone like philinCT would have a very good chance because he would know the setup.
Anyway who needs to a director when you could be a producer actor sound recordist editor as well as a director all on Chienworks site.
I think another way not that I would recomend this but you have to be very competitive and ruthless and thick skinned like if you were running a race and confident that you are the best but not confrontational just sure of your abilities
"you have the likes of Sly, Arnold, Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith and others known more for one liners."
I'm not sure about the Tommy Lee Jones part of this. True he's done a lot of typical Hollywood stuff like Men In Black, but I think he has also done better work in films like Cobb.
