A "vob" is a chunk of a DVD. It is closely related to an .mpg file, and is typically comprised of an interwoven compressed video and audio stream.

In many cases you can change the extension of a file from .vob to .mpg and an mpeg player will then play it.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "vob trailer." It could be that this vob is part of a DVD and is a separate short video segment, such as a copyright notice or a preview of future releases.

If you want to use the audio from a VOB file, you need to demux it by using software such as DV2AVI.
