What is "Copy Inhibit"???

Randy Brown wrote on 1/14/2003, 4:52 PM
Hi everyone,
When printing to tape after a few seconds I get "Copy Inhibit" displayed and then my camera (Sony PD150) stops recording. It happens right after an mp3 sound effect (thunder) I downloaded from one of those free sites. You reckon I've violated some kind of copyright? I don't even remember where I got it.

TIA,
Randy

Either your MP3 file is copy protected or there is a glitch in it. Perhaps it was not supposed to be "free."

Fascinating.

But if you converted the mp3 sound to a wav surely that would strip out any copy protection info and allow you to test your theory.

Actually it's not related to the mp3 because I just deleted the mp3 and the video clip that went with it and it does the same thing. The video and audio right after it have been PTPed before with no problems, so now I'm really confused. Any suggestions...I'm supposed to deliver this by noon tomorrow. I'll be back in about an hour.
Thanks again guys,
Randy

I'm not exactly sure how it works, but think of it as a watermark on a digital image (except you can't hear it). It doesn't matter what kind of file format or compression you save it as, the watermark remains.

Thanks Jeremy, sounds logical, but like I say, it's still doing it after deleting that section and in a place that has PTPed before with no problem.
Thanks,
Randy

Hi,

I had once a problem with copy inhibit using footage from a Sony VX-1000. I figured out that the message copy inhibit appeared while printing to tape a scene captured from the last 5 minutes before end of tape. It seems that something in the dv stream also indicates the the soon end of tape and for a print to tape this signal will be interpreted the false way. Forcing to change this scene by putting a filter on it solved the problem.

post your email address and will send you a thunder clip I recorded myself with a DVCAM unit.

For what it is worth, the Sony "prosumer" DHR 1000 DV editing deck will not copy any VHS tape that has macrovision anti-piracy on it. The DSR 20 "industrial" will, no problem. TO save my little guy's DR. Seuss tapes I had to take the feed from VHS into a hardware MPEG2 encoder then use that file to make the DVD clips. Ain't no copy protection working under those circumstances.

I'm not sure what you mean David, could you please elaborate?

Hey thanks Peter, it's

I think the workaround today (since I need this on VHS by noon) is to manually PTP directly to VHS but I would like to archive this to DV tape if you guys have any more thoughts.

Thanks again guys,
Randy

Hi Randy,

another thought is something in that .veg is buggy... if you deleted the vid and aud where the hitch is, and it still does it.

You might open another instance of Vegas and copy everything to the new project and see if that works, or try the above trick by placing a null-effect on the output, like brightness-contrast with no adjustment.

Hey thanks Marty; so you're saying put a "null-effect on the output" of all video and audio tracks?

>You might open another instance of Vegas and copy everything to the new project and see if that works...<

I've never done this in VV; do I just(from the new instance) select all/copy & paste, replacing all media in the original?
Thanks again Marty,
Randy

Hi Randy,

YOu can drop any video effect on the preview window, and it will apply to the entire program.

Actually, I meant copy all events to a new empty project...

Ctrl-A (select all), copy, paste. Generated media like titles will need to be saved as presets, then applied in the second instance. (Just a wild shot that it will fix the problem)

I did not know that...what would I do without you guys?!

I'll try both suggestions tomorrow and report back if one of them works.

Now I have a new problem: the temporary workaround I was going to try (straight to VHS to meet today's deadline) worked, but now the end cuts off. I basically used one of the Sundance contestants settings for Satish's 3D plug in (the screen flips away) but it's not there on the VHS dub. I guess I'll try again.

Thanks again everyone,
Randy

Hi,

Well make the scene leading to the problem for example a little bit brighter or darker or whatever you want. Doing so, will cause Vegas to change the data of the scene, if you add a scene without any filters, effects or others..., vegas video will just copy the dv data and not reencode it. Maybe choosing resample from clip properties will also help, as I don't actually know if the scene is changed even in a resample or if the original data is just copied if speed was not changed. Another thing you could also try is converting the scene from dv to uncompressed video and try using this one (but this will take a lot of space).

Bye,
David

Same with the Sony DSR-11. It does pass through the DV signal so I can capture copy protected stuff to my hard drive. I just can't record it to tape. some one suggested cropping the top couple lines of the video in Vegas as a defeat for the Macrovision.
