What is Vegas Effects exactly?

TTTT wrote on 6/24/2021, 2:34 AM

Hello,

I just installed Vegas Post trial version and I am trying to understand what it brings exactly.
I usually use Vegas Pro with Ignite Pro plug-ins (full licence) and optionally NeatVideo for Vegas.

After reading https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/vegas-post/vegas-effects/ stating things like "video repair" etc. , I expected that Vegas Effects would bring a kind of plug-in pack that could compete with Ignite Pro and/or NeatVideo. But I see no new plug-ins in Vegas.
If I understand right, Vegas Effects mostly helps apply plug-ins and transformation "before" using them in Vegas Pro tracks, making them external to Vegas Pro workflow.

In Vegas Effects, I see that there are a lot of plug-ins, but I think that they're mostly/only my initial Vegas Pro + Ignite Pro plug-in list.

So, does Vegas Effects actually bring new effects/plug-ins or is it only some kind of "workflow addon"? (Which may be interesting too, though not what I first expected.)

Vegas Effects is a trimmed down version of FXHome's HitFilm Pro and so it would be expected that the basic VFX in Vegas Effects are the same basic VFX in HitFilm Pro. Ignite Pro is the plugin pack of HitFilm Pro's VFX which enables those plugins to be used in other NLEs such as Vegas Pro.

To get an idea of what Vegas Effects offers, have a look at HitFilm Pro's product webpage https://fxhome.com/product/hitfilm-pro - but take into account that the main HitFilm Pro inclusions not coming with Vegas Effects are Foundry and Mocha planar tracking. There may be others as well.

The advantage of HitFilm Pro and Vegas Effects is that they have much wider functions with composite creation.

One way to access Vegas Effects in Vegas Pro 18 is to click on the hamburger at the top RH corner of the video event on the timeline and click on 'Edit selected event in VEGAS Effects'. It will then take you to the Vegas Effects program.

I am not completely sure about this, but I recall reading on the forum some time ago that the trial version of Vegas Post only provides the basic Vegas Pro program, but not Vegas Effects. Hopefully, somebody could confirm whether this is the case or not.

So you mean that I don't see any new plug-ins because I already have them? (Since Ignite Pro is Hitfilm Pro plug-in pack). Or because they are not included in the pack.

And thank you for the precision about Vegas Effect being similar to Hitfilm Pro.

Also I can confirm that when installing Vegas Post trial I got Vegas Effects demo version.

Yes. I believe that the situation will be that your Ignite Pro pack enables those plugins to be available within Vegas Pro; however, if you did not have Ignite Pro, those same VFX would only be accessible in Vegas Effects or HitFilm Pro, whichever one is installed.

It would be great if someone on the forum with Vegas Effects could confirm that the VFX in VE are exactly the same as in Ignite Pro https://fxhome.com/product/ignite-pro/features. But from https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/vegas-post/vegas-effects/#productMenu , VE's VFX do seem to be the same as in HitFilm Pro and Ignite Pro.

EDIT: Comments on FXHome's forum have come to the same conclusion: the VFX in Vegas Effects are the same as in HitFilm Pro (thus Ignite Pro). One example is https://community.fxhome.com/discussion/comment/148998#Comment_148998

I'm going to venture an alternate explanation, the new plug ins that you may be seeking are embedded in HitFilm Pro, (Vegas effects) as a program within a program and are accessible only when you'd want to edit via HitFilm, which takes a few seconds to open and then you're in a whole new environment.

I do not use HitFilm Pro, I use Ignite Pro plug-ins in Vegas. And I don't know it I am looking for a new plug-in, I am asking if there is anything new. I expected Magix came up with a full plug-in suite branded as a Vegas product, I didn't expect that that would come with FXhome's Ignite plug-ins in the first place (if this is confirmed at all...)

They are pretty close same (based evaluation what I just did), but with HitFilm pro one gets two interesting 3rd party tools (limited base version of Mocha (important point is that it really is not that full version of Mocha) and Boris 3D Objects, https://fxhome.com/store/hitfilm-express, which are not available in Vegas Effects). Still after evaluation I put my coins into Vegas Post Suite, since I kind of liked Vegas Pro.

Vegas Post Suite trial contains full Vegas Effects (and Vegas Image (pretty much same as imerge pro)), Vegas Effects adds in trial mode "ding ding" extra sounds in clips, and both add big banner in top of the output. Otherwise they seemed full versions.

And since Vegas Effects and Hitfilm are close relatives, I was actually able to open effect created in Vegas Effects in hitfilm express and vice-versa (just needed to change filename extension).

Ok so, if Vegas Effects doesn't even come with hitfilm-express, I guess it doesn't include Ignite Pro plug-in (it would be clearly advertised on Vegas Effects page also...)
My most likely conclusion at this point is that Vegas Effects doesn't come with any new plug-in or image processing than native Vegas Pro plug-ins.

My most likely conclusion at this point is that Vegas Effects doesn't come with any new plug-in or image processing than native Vegas Pro plug-ins.

Just to clarify because there seems to be a bit of confusion entering the topic. Vegas Effects is a trimmed down version of HitFilm Pro. Vegas Effects does not include any Vegas Pro VFX plugins at all. The VFX plugins in Vegas Effects are sourced from HitFilm Pro - and HitFilm Pro's proprietary VFX are also the source for Ignite Pro.

HitFilm Express is a vastly trimmed down and very basic version of HitFilm Pro and is available free from FXHome. Express relies on users buying add-on VFX packages from FXHome where needed - but all of those extra 'packages' are already included natively in HitFilm Pro and, almost certainly, in Vegas Effects (other than Mocha and Foundry). There's nothing missing in HitFilm Pro that is available in HitFilm Express.

Summary: if you've got Ignite Pro and all you want from Vegas Post / Vegas Effects are those very same plugins - and you don't need advanced compositing - then I would think that's there's little point in getting Post.

One caveat though - not all Ignite Pro plugins function in all NLEs whereas all do in HitFilm Pro. Check out https://fxhome.com/product/ignite-pro compatibility to see which VFX that work in HitFilm Pro (and thus Vegas Effects) do not function as an Ignite Pro plugin directly within Vegas Pro.

Yes, right. Sorry. I said Vegas Effects doesn't include any other plug-ins but I more thinking like "what you get when you get Vegas Post", so I made a slight confusion between Vegas Effects and Vegas Post levels.

Edit: I'm not sure yet if I'm interested in advanced compositing.
But know if Post includes Ignite Pro, and how much of it, could be useful on the day I would need to update Ignite Pro ... (but I think there's time until then)

@Dexcon Thanks for the clarification but one thing puzzles me. According to the HitFilm Pro website HitFilm Pro is basically a video editor. As such it appears to be a competitor to Vegas Pro although it probably includes additional features that VP doesn't have. As Vegas Effects is a trimmed down version of HitFilm Pro does Vegas Effects still include the editing aspects of HitFilm Pro?

Dexcon wrote on 6/24/2021, 11:55 PM

@EricLNZ  ... a very good question. There have been quite a few questions on the forum over quite some time asking for more details about Vegas Post/Vegas Effects but there have been few answers/comments. A few weeks ago, an OP asked for details about what VFX are in Vegas Effects - there were no responses even days later.

Vegas Effects information and features on Vegas Post Suite's webpage doesn't show what the VE window looks like; instead, a Vegas Pro workspace image is shown under VE's Workflow heading. So I have just done a bit of an explore online and found 2 YT reviews of Vegas Effects as it was with Vegas Pro 17. The first one - - has many full screen shots of VE's workspace, including this one:

And this YT tutorial - - provides an intro tutorial into the basic workflow of Vegas Effects (from 56 seconds in).

From these 2 YTs, I think that anyone familiar with working in HitFilm Pro would be comfortable with VE, but it does seem that VE does not provide any editing capabilities, both tutorials showing only one video event on VE's timeline at any one time. Interestingly, the 2nd YT shows the importing of a video event into VE, but the attached audio event does follow into VE. To be fair, this is the same as occurs with the long existing 'Edit in HitFilm' function in Vegas Pro - only the video event is exported to HitFilm Pro.

From the 2nd YT, the VFX packages that are showing in VE's Effects window are the same as appear in HitFilm Pro. Curiously, even the Audio plugin package is there, but it doesn't seem that VE provides any audio functions on the timeline.

Anyway, I think that these YT tutorials answer a lot of questions that have gone unanswered for some time.

VEGAS Effects is far more powerful than Ignite Pro.

Ignite Pro is only filters, its FX can access only one or two layers in the timeline. VEGAS Effects is compositor, its FX can access any layer in the timeline;

Ignite Pro doesn't contain neon path FX because OFX system can't pass on path data from VEGAS to Ignite. VEGAS Effects contain neon path FX because neon path FX is native FX and can read path data from VEGAS Effects;

Ignite Pro FX can be only added to plane layer in VEGAS Pro. VEGAS Effects FX can be added to 3D models;

....

And what workflow can VEGAS Effects bring to VEGAS Pro? It just work like After effects + VEGAS Pro. The only difference is you can import VEGAS Effects project files to VEGAS Pro without rendering.
