What's going to be the hit at NAB this year?

busterkeaton wrote on 3/16/2006, 11:36 AM
Last year, it was Vic Milt's Lighting DVD.

Well I just got a mailing from the VASST crew and they have some nice DVD's coming out this Monday. They are not up on the website yet. The one I am looking foward to is a Vegas-specific Color Correction DVD by this board's own Glenn Chan. If you have seen Glenn's posts or gotten his presets, you know he knows his stuff.

If you have ever looked at a color correction tutorial and wondered about how to translate the commands into Vegas, you know why I think this is going to be big.

Yeah! Hope to see lots of great stuff from VASST. Haven't seen my home e-mail yet so another thing to look forward to today.

I'm really looking forward to their new training DVD's - should be some pretty good stuff in them from what I can see.

Okay, I got a sneak peak at some of the Absolute Vegas DVD's. All I can say is I GOTTA GET THESE! Every disk is packed full of step-by-step top notch instruction and the VASST allstar wizards are right there taking you through each technique personally. It's like you're getting one-on-one training. Beginners and pro's will improve their skills with these DVDs. Better yet, you can pick which DVD's you want without spending big bucks for DVD's you might not need. There are loads of extras, tips, stock media, and free plugins on every disk too. Man, you asked about what was going to be the big hit for Vegas at NAB? I'm predicting it will be the Vegas Absolute Series. It's that good! Hope they are available soon!

I was over on the NAB site but failed to find out how much general admission is - lots of pricey activities though. How much to just get in through the door? //Garo

You can get FREE tickets lots of places. See what VASST has, they gave me a ticket last year. And this year, as I had been last year, NAB sent me FREE tickets for everything.

For me, the big hit will be HD delivery solutions available and affordable for consumers and without DRM that cripples current HD displays. (I may be dreaming here.)

A more realistic and personally helpful hit would be Vegas 7 using the GPU to accelerate video preview and rendering.

Stewart002:
One thing I have found if Vasst or Sony would put the stuff in a large book by block diagram & arrows it would be hugely faster to look up and perform the task. By the time you find what you are looking for on the disc the task would already have been accomplished with the book. If you could duplicate this on the DVD (Huge index) Block diagram & arrows with pictures----now you have something to crow about. It would work so well that Sony would install it permanently into the "HELP" of Vegas. Scenario never before having operated Vegas---Click help, find desired action in index, click, follow instructions inside of blocks, click, follow arrows, click done. You won't know what you did at first but then will learn after a few times. Whoever creates this will be a national hero.

JJK,
I think you might be pleased with these DVDs. They work similar to what you are talking about via the chapters. I remember the Video Factory video tutorials that were so cool when I started editing because I could go to the help button, look up the topic or task, and what came up was a video showing exactly how to do it complete with close up views of the timeline while the cursor moved and the voice over explained what was being done. The same kind of method is used on these DVD's with close up views of the action while the instructor explains in detail what is going on, several ways to do it, and a preference for what they like best. The great thing about these DVD's, and what makes them unique (IMHO), is the knowledge of the instructor, really in depth content coverage (from soup to nuts covering lots of things I haven't seen covered before), great tips/methods on how to do things best, and how fast they get to the important stuff with little or no fluff. I have all of the books too but for me, seeing it done and hearing why it's good doing it this way really gets me pointed in the right direction. DVD's are more demo/performance oriented so I can "learn" by doing right along with the course. That's what I mean when I say it's like having a personal tutorial by the instructor. Just my learning style preference I guess. I never get through the whole book in one sitting while most often I do get through a whole DVD. And, my retention seems better with DVD's than with reading the book (personal limitation maybe ;-). I end up using the books for reference after reading and tab whatever I look up as I probably will need it again. Anyway, sorry to go on but I'm jazzed about these DVD's (can you tell?). Really looking forward to their release.

Samples of the VASST Absolute Vegas training DVDs are up on the VASST site here: http://www.vasst.com/coming_soon.htm. What do you think?

I don't know that the Absolute series will be the "Hit of the show" but do expect that NAB will be a good launching pad for it. We're also excited about some new books launching at NAB, plus other new products. We hope the Vegas Users Party is a big hit like it was last year, of course.
Glenn Chan did an awesome job with his color correction DVD, and he's got some sweet calibration tools that he created himself that come with that particular DVD.
All in all, there are a lot of surprises at NAB this year, with some really fun announcements that will take place at the Vegas Users Party. It's Vegas, after all! :-)
