What's involved in capture

This is kind of a dumb question but is there a codec involved in capture or is the SF codec come into play only when a clip is rendered? What I was wondering is if the capture part is the same no matter what program is used.

If you have a DV camera, the compression is done by the camera, as it is recorded to tape, and capturing over 1394 is just a data copy. The DV codec is used for decompressing and recompressing the data in the editing app.
