Hi
I have a still image that ide like to be able to use as a background on a video clip, i'de like to be able to see ALL the image on the TV, therefore ive created a 720 x 480 blank canvas and am going to paste the background picture into this. However, as theres a title safe are what size do i need to make the picture for it to fill the TV screen yet not lose any of the actual picture? ive tried several different sizes but wondered if there was a specific size that will get it dead on.

Simon

follow the excellent link and read.

If you want a simple answer without any reading, open your project and take a snapshot from the preview window with the settings at "project-size" and "best quality". Save it as a jpg to the desktop and look at its properties/summary by right-clicking the file. The parameters of size, resolution and bit-depth are all shown. Any file you want to use in that project should match these figures.

and then read the excellent link

Hi Simon,

To guarantee the entire image will be seen, scale the image smaller (to "title safe") since there is variation in TV manufacture, and you will lose the edges due to TV overscan.

You could fill the background edges with any color, pattern, image or whatever.

I work at a TV station making commercials and such. Non DV NTSC is 640x480, and made a safe zone of 75 pixels in on each size of the picture, and about 50 from the top/bottom. The reason I put the 75 pixels on each side is because different TV's overscan size is different. Not much, but a little. If you use 720x480 (like you said), do the same. A TV only display's a certain size, and the wider view of theh 720 will look the same as a 640x480.

FWIW, If you are mastering to DV SoFo suggests 655x480 for stills aspect. You can scale with that aspect to fit safety.
