Whence Dual Monitors

Anyone have a workaround for the one-monitor setup of Vegas? I don't mean being able to divide the workspace across two screens, or having the split-screen feature in Vegas (a wonderful invention indeed), but being able to display two separate, complete screens representing "Source" and "Project" monitors a la Avid or Premiere. My only thought is to run two instances of Vegas and switch between them on the taskbar.

I don't believe there is any way to do this within one instance of Vegas. Then again, many thousands of us have been editing in Vegas for years without it, so i don't think it's a huge problem. What do you need to accomplish that you think would be aided by two previews? We might be able to suggest alternate workflow methods that would help you.

The trimmer is the same idea as a source preview/edit

Trimmer works great for me. If you have a need to open up two monitor screens at the same time, you could always open up a second instance of Vegas, or open the media file in Windows Media Player, Quick Time Player or Winamp.

Also, look at the split-screen monitor functions of Vegas, and see if this gets you what you want.

Chienworks & others: Thanks for the thoughtful ideas. I think it's only a question of looking at "half" a screen when I'm doing the with-without comparison, rather than two screens side by side. On the other hand, I recently junked my old Hollywood DV Bridge and got a Canopus ADVC-100. Maybe all I need is to get the habit of using my 19" TV screen all the time, and get over the "crash-phobia" I developed with the DV Bridge.

The Trimmer idea helped too. Only problem I hit with the Trimmer is that I sometimes work with two audio tracks (one from a boom mike) and can't squeeze it all into the Trimmer. Anyway, I can live with the split screen. No danger of me bolting for another NLE. Hear that, Sony?

Do you think it would be a nice feature for the trimmer to have its own preview window rather than sharing the program window? And perhaps having some small ability to sync up to the program window-at least when playback stops?

Not going anywhere with this, just asking.

I think where the two monitor windows comes in very handy is for color correction. My understanding is in Avid Express you can have windos showing each side of a cut, open color balance in one and in a few clciks have it match the color of a chosen object (say sky or water) on each side of the cut.

Not having been able to get Avid Express to run with my camera i have no hands on with it so I'm only going on a canned demo I watched.
