Where are those tutorial files?

seeker wrote on 5/16/2002, 3:40 AM
Hi All,

I newly purchased Vegas Video 3 as a download, and also purchased the Vegas Video 3 Content CD, which arrived a couple of days ago. I am trying to go through the tutorials in the Vegas Video 3.0 PDF (I downloaded it separately), and they refer to the following Vegas tutorial files:

01_voiceover.veg, 02_editing.veg, 03_musicbed.veg, 04_background.veg,

05_overlay.veg, 06_panning.veg, 07_fades.veg, 08_trackmotion.veg, 09_velocity.veg

Since these files were not in my download of VV3, I expected them to appear in the Content CD, but it contains no tutorials or veg files. I also did not find these files on ftp-porker nor did I find them at the tutorial URL (which supports VV2, but unfortunately not VV3):

http://www.sonicfoundry.com/tutorials/default.asp

My question is, where can I find the above-listed VV3 tutorial files?

Mine are on the application CD only in the folder "Sample Projects"

They are now on the FTP server:

ftp://dude:sweet@porker.sonicfoundry.com/Sample%20Projects/Sample%20Projects%20from%20Vegas%203%20CD/

///d@

Dennis,

Thanks for the effort. Something is not quite right yet. I pasted the URL into Internet Explorer's Address field and got an error box:

FTP folder error: An error occurred opening the folder on the FTP Server. Make sure you have permission to access this folder.
Details: 550 /dude/Sample Projects/Sample Project from Vegas 3 CD/d@: The system cannot find the file specified.

I also noticed that the URL that I pasted,

ftp://dude:sweet@porker.sonicfoundry.com/Sample%20Projects/Sample%20Projects%20from%20Vegas%203%20CD////d@

automatically changed to end in /d@/

Three of the four /s preceding the d@ got dropped.

I also re-navigated the ftp-porker site and didn't find any new material.

Meanwhile, I have been keeping busy downloading material from the Compositing and Motion Basics folder, and I am ready to start downloading the kayaker.avi file. It will take a while, since I am using a 56.6 modem. It's not as large as the skiing.avi that I spent most of this evening downloading, but it will take a while anyway, so I will let it download while I sleep. I will check back in the forum later today to see if you have a suggestion as to how I can access the tutorial files. Thanks for your effort. I appreciate it and the helpful attitude of Sonic Foundry and the forum participants.

Mike,

I don't have an application CD because I did the download purchase. Apparently the download purchase does not contain nearly as much as the boxed application CD. I guess I should have chosen the boxed version of Vegas Video. I did order the Content CD, but it also does not have the tutorial files.

I tried to combine the download purchase with a boxed purchase by asking Sonic Foundry to simply send me the serial number of the boxed product so that I could start using the demo download, but they explained that the boxed serial number was not accessible to them. So, in my impatience, I went for the download purchase.

If I had done a little arithemetic, I would have realized that it can take a week or more to download the contents of a single CD using a dial-up modem. And the download process is not without its hazards. I got over 30 Mb of the horse.avi file downloaded when the connection hung for some reason. It was a bad hang--I had to use Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get out of it. I was using the standard ftp "Copy to Folder" method, so I will probably have to repeat that download from the beginning. I have since switched to using Download Accelerator Plus to do resumable downloads to protect against further such disasters. Thanks for the information about the application CD. I will buy the boxed version of Vegas Video 4.

I'm not sure if this will help you, but I could not FTP everything from SF using Internet Explorer - IE is just not a really good FTP program. So, I used the command line version of FTP. I think it is installed on all Windows computers running TCP/IP. Just open a MS-DOS prompt or Command Prompt or whatever you have in your Programs menu that will give you a command line, then type in:

ftp porker.sonicfoundry.com

Enter the user name and password. From there you'll need to know a little about this FTP program.

ls or dir - will list files in the current directory of the FTP server.
get - transfers a single file from the FTP site to your current folder on your computer.
cd - will allow you change folders on the FTP server.
lcd - will allow you change your computer's current folder.

Everything is case sensitive so beware. Files and folders with spaces need to be enclosed with double quotes.

Maybe this was overkill for this forum and I hope it was accurate. But using this method I was able to find everything I needed on the SF FTP site.

There are also other nice FTP programs out there.

seeker, the ///d@ is SonicDennis' signature line. It's not part of the URL.

Kelly,

Thanks for that information. I did not know that.

Ron,

I used FTP to access porker.sonicfoundry.com and it saw exactly the same folders and contents that I have been seeing in Internet Explorer. The following is a transcript of the last part of my session:

ftp> ls
200 PORT command successful.
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for file list.
backlit shadow
fog
Light Sabre
Rain
reflection
Sample Projects from Vegas 3 CD
Transporter
Vegas Captioning Shell.txt
226 Transfer complete.
ftp: 126 bytes received in 0.00 seconds 126000.00Kbytes/sec.
ftp> cd "Sample Projects from Vegas 3 CD"
250 CWD command successful.
ftp> ls
200 PORT command successful.
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for file list.
Compositing and Motion Basics
SampleAudioMix
Video Editing
Web Close captioning and metadata
226 Transfer complete.
ftp: 97 bytes received in 0.05Seconds 1.94Kbytes/sec.
ftp> quit
221

That session shows that the "Sample Projects from Vegas 3 CD" folder does not contain any new Tutorial folders. Nothing showed up in FTP that did not also appear in Internet Explorer navigation. I suspect there is a UNIX file permissions problem that makes these tutorial files accessible only by the Owner and Super User.

But thanks for the tip to try the FTP utility. It provided corroboration that the tutorial files are still inaccessible to "dude." I am optimistic that the file permissions will be changed some time soon and the tutorial files will become accessible on porker.sonicfoundry.com.

Dennis,

> They are now on the FTP server: <

Apparently not. I am looking for the nine tutorials, not the four sample project folders. The tutorials would contain, among others, the following files: 01_voiceover.veg, 02_editing.veg, 03_musicbed.veg, 04_background.veg, 05_overlay.veg, 06_panning.veg, 07_fades.veg, 08_trackmotion.veg, 09_velocity.veg

I asked the same thing here:

http://www.sonicfoundry.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=102633

After some researching it turned out that the sample projects on SoFo's FTP site are NOT the same as the one described in the VV3 manual.

Until someone that didn't make the "mistake" in purchasing it via Internet can put the Sample Projects in the Application CD on the net for open access, or -- even better -- SoFo does the right thing and do that themslves, you'll have not much of a choice than reading between the lines and try to get along w/o the files themselves.

With some imagination you can get through the tutorial tasks even without the given files. Remeber, the tutorials are there for teaching you some basic stuff to get you off the ground (moving a sound event to achieve lip synching, marking/splitting/deleting events, etc.). I was able to get through most of that material w/o the necessary files.

I know it's a bit of a PITA but in the end is not such a big deal.

Florian,

So, did no one at all respond to your message?

> I have a "trialing newbie" question: <

By that, do you mean that you have downloaded the trial version of Vegas Video 3 and that you have not entered a serial number? Are you using Vegas Video in the "trial" mode?

> After some browsing I found the address of the sonic foundry FTP server where the "Sample Projects" missing from the on-line version of VV3 were located. I've managed to download successfully the whole 188 Megs but I have a bit of a problem: <

I thought I downloaded the same four directories and they totalled 154MB. I am wondering why we have that much discrepancy. My Compositing and Motion Basics folder has 127MB in 22 files and 0 folders. My SampleAudioMix folder has 22.0MB in 31 files 0 folders. My Video Editing folder has 4.43MB in 7 files 0 folders. My Web Close captioning and metadata has 45.3KB (notice that is kilobytes, not megabytes -- could that be the discrepancy?) in 3 files 0 folders.

> The files I've downloaded are inconsistent with the material presented in the large manual (the one w/ 363 pages). <

The manual has both tutorials and sample projects. I was asking about the tutorials, which are absent from the site. The Compositing and Motion Basics folder that you downloaded contains a "Panning with still images.veg" project (page 77), a "Track motion.veg" project (page 79), and a "Compositing with masks.veg" project (page 78) among others (leftovers?). The Video Editing folder contains a "TV spot.veg" project (page 75). The SampleAudioMix folder contains the "Audio mix.veg" project (page 74). The Web Close captioning and metadata folder contains the "Web spot with captioning.veg" project (page 76). That covers the six sample projects that appear in the Table of Contents on page 6. I don't see the discrepancies in the Sample Projects, but I haven't opened them yet, so maybe I missed something. But the tutorials (the "veg" files that I enumerated in my root message) simply aren't on the ftp-porker site anywhere that I could find.

Dennis,

Thanks, but a problem remains. For details, see my response to Dave Hill (SonicEPM) in, "SoFo, please help: Missing files on FTP-porker!"
