Where did this button come from?! *pics inside*

Loaded up Vegas tonight and noticed a new button on my master bus control. Wasn't there before- at least not that I noticed. It seems to control where my sound come out of (center/left/right). Btw, I'm using a set a Klipsch Promedia 5.1s.

Why and where did this come from?! How do I disable it?!

However I, since, have found out what the problem was- under OPTIONS> PREFERENCES> AUDIO DEVICE.... my audio device was changed to "Direct Sound Surround Mapper". I switched it back to "Windows Classic Wave Driver" which I think was what it was set at by default.

What should it be set at, and why?
a. Microsoft Sound Mapper
b. Direct Sound Surround Mapper
c. Windows Classic Wave Driver
d. Creative ASIO

Microsoft mapper for most uses.
Classic or Asio if you are using an external soundcard, or card that supports ASIO, multichannels, etc. Depends on the card.
Set your project properties to stereo rather than 5.1, and this should go away anyway.
It's allowing you to determine outputs for audio, obviously, what isn't so obvious is how it got that way. If your work is in stereo, you should never be seeing this button look like this. Go to File>project properties, and set audio to stereo. Or, press the properties button right next to the Master volume control in your mixer and it will allow you to do the same thing. Hope this helps.

Spot's right. I have a 5.1 sound card, an I use Direct Sound Driver. However, I must change my project from stereo to 5.1 to use the surround output. I'd leave it at that default since it will most likely use any enhanced features of your card (unless you have a more specific driver listed, like your ASIO).

so is this card up to snuff? I recall you mentioning in the training series that "soundblaster cards and the like are barely cutting the mustard". What benefits would a Darla or a card along those lines have over and Audigy or Audigy2?
I'm also working with Klipsch 5.1 promedias, which are incredible speakers....how do they differ from say a set of Makie studio monitors? Is it similar to the difference between using a TV vs a properly calibrated NTSC monitor?

Lastly if I'm running an Audigy card w/ Klipsch speakers what setting should I use and why? Thanks in advance!
