Where is the audio

If I open one of my vob files form Video_ts in Vegas, it can play video not audio. If I open it in Power DVD I get both sound and video. If I change the name of the file to MPG extension, it will open in Vegas and DVDA but will not play audio. If I check properties on file I fine no AC3 noted. Where is the audio and why can't DVDA or Vegas play it? Why does Power DV play both video and audio? I have a lot of dumb questions.

VOBs can have multiple audio files in them. Also navigation, subtitles, and much more. The developers at Sony chose not to include any VOB reading capability directly in Vegas. However, because of the nature of MPEG (which is the encoding used for the video in VOB files), Vegas can often display the video.

I hope Sony includes the ability to natively read VOBs in future releases, including the ability to specify which audio track to play. This is needed so that we can re-use video that we have put on DVDs.

In the meantime, you have to use a tool like DVD2AVI (see www.domm9.net) to extract the audio channel you want to use, and then put that below the VOB video inside of Vegas. It's a pain in the neck extra step, but usually doesn't take too long.

Search for "VOB" along with DVD2AVI in these forums to get more information.
