Go>Toolbar>Insert>Insert Graphic>Files of Type . . listed there is Photoshop *.psd - can't see Adobe Illustrator . . Whether this is for Backgrounds I don't know . . .

Any good? - You got DVDA2?

If you right-click on a menu, then choose "Set Background Media," you'll get a dialog box to open a file to use for the background. Click the arrow to the right of the "File Type" field, and you'll see a list of all valid file types.

PSD is among them.

Thanks Grazie. I haven't got DVDA at all yet. I'm using Premiere 6.5 with TMPGEnc DVD Author. I need to upgrade to another product to get subtitling so I'm just doing my research before I opt for either DVDA2 or Adobe Encore 1.5. Now I know DVDA2 supports .psd, this issue is even between the 2 products.

Thanks Rob. I notice Adobe's own Encore doesn't even support .ai format, so I'm not surprised DVDA doesn't either. .psd will do fine.

Not surprised about the Illustrator format... I've never used it, but itsn't it a pretty priority format, uses vector graphics doesn't it?

FYI, just so you know, DVDA doesn't have support for multiple layered PSD's. Or, at least, if it can use them, it will treat them as flat files. I know some DVD authoring programs will let you have a background on one layer, buttons on other layers, etc and will make each layer its own object. DVDA does not do this. So, really, there's not much advantage to using PSD, as far as I can tell.
