Which motion blur type in the project settings?

I understand pretty much all the project setting parameters except for the motion blur type. I know what real motion blur is in video. What is the project settings motion blur do? Is it just for generated media? Does it affect video when you change the playback speed? Does it affect deinterlacing? Is one setting the best or is there a tradeoff where you use different settings for different types of projects? Do certain motion blur settings slow previews or render times?

It has no effect unless you add a motion blur envelope in the video buss. The asymmetric ones are similar to what you get from a camera's shutter. None of them are the same as what a camera's shutter does though. Use with care and look carefully at the results as they can be horrid in subtle ways. Not the fault of Vegas, AE does no better.
Vegas also has Supersampling. Only kicks in when motion is created in Vegas. It helps to get more realistic MB by tweening motion.
Motion Blur is a huge hit on render and playback performance.

The symetric variants also have their uses, play with them, watch what can happen at a cut :)

"What is the project settings motion blur do?" Adds Blur to Movement, over the whole project. So, in turn, that is why this can be Controlled, project wide, by the Video Bus Track, and its Motion Blur Envelop. Meaning the BUS controls the actual application of MB, its amount and appearance, but ONLY if MB is set to happen through the Project Properties. What Bob said!

"Is it just for generated media?" No. I've used it on construction diggers and people walking down London streets - street scenes are great for this!

"Does it affect video when you change the playback speed?" When, in PREVIEW or FINAL RENDER? Please explain? And more importantly the importance of this to you.

"Does it affect deinterlacing?" Explain?

"Is one setting the best . . . " What do you mean by "best"? - See below . .

" . . or is there a tradeoff where you use different settings for different types of projects?" Explain further the importance of "tradeoff"? Is this regarding Render times, Previewing (FPS) speeds, quality, emotional effect? What exactly? I think you are asking what SHOULD you be using to achieve greater efficiency in the PROCESS? Is that it? Well, it's not about that, it's about what EFFECT you want to achieve? But here again wanting to see the result of using one of the 6 alternatives in REAL time would require a beefy PC and/or at least a RAM Preview or pre-render to view fps at a Preview that you could in turn decide if this was the effect you were after?

"Do certain motion blur settings slow previews or render times?" When Invoked yes. But so does everything we do? Again, it sounds like you are asking for efficiency, and in my opinion it isn't about that, it is to do with the EFFECT you/I/we want to achieve. So which is the question you are asking? Efficiency or Effect?
