Why am I getting terrible "S" splits?

Ever since V4a, b, c, d, e, & 5.0a, b (Ihave 5.ob) when I split a clip I have to check the beginning and end of the split to see if there is one extra frame tagging along for the ride. It is clearly evident when an fx is applied as it applies itself to all the frames except the tag-along frame. On playback it shows up as a color shift blink or a blink. This is using default settings in the preferences. Why do I have to mickey mouse around to get a clean cut?
Also noticed that after many hours of operation doing complex stuff (using up memory) V5.0b will say you did a naughty thing then dump itself. Upon reboot you have to resave the "auto resave file" to get everything back again. Why isn't there a warning menu to say" Vegas is running out of memory and you must reboot now to reset the paging file".
I believe the things I mentioned above could be memory related or even bad memory but the computer does'nt say so. I have 2 gig of ram.
P4 3.4 meg, 800 buss and an Intel board of which I will never purchase again. I will go back to the Supermicro boards.

The super microboards simply ROCK! I've run into this error a couple times on my AMD system, but never on my Intel/Supermicro or Intel/Intel systems.
I don't know why you are seeing the bad splits...I'm not seeing that. Do you have a large allocation of RAM for previews? Try shutting this down, and see if that helps.

I am using an "EZ Keyboard" for Adobe Premier where the "S" key says "last frame". Would this have anything to do with my problem?

I have always had to "play" with the clips I split as well particularly when adding dissolves, etc. It is just one more of the un-addressed issues that made me stop buying Vegas after version 4.
